It looks like half a cam plug to me, though there a type that can be fitted without the case being separated so maybe it was one of those.

It’s more likely the hole in the bearing is oval – a new bearing cures that. But the bigger problem is the case bore may be oversize.

It’s the wrong way round, the flat face should be outboard.

Looks a bit battered.. been hammered in after? And glooped over with extra sealant?

Dunno, it’s possibly a core plug. Bloke built the engine and realised he’d forgotten the cam plug so hammered a core plug in – maybe.

  7. Agreed , looks like a core plug .

Just saying . i think the goo has been smoothed over rather than squished out .
That`s a hell of a lot of goo to be squished out and then smoothed over ?

Was the sealant smeared to stop oil leaks from a case that has been screwdriver hammered to split the case ?

    Thanks all.

I'm sort of looking forward to it in a nervous way. It's a shame about the past bodge jobs done at great expense by the po...I have a receipt from their time that seems they were ripped off big time.

But I'm going to do it properly and learn loads so happy days :)

It’s easy, go for it. You might even get a certificate and a T-shirt*. It’s easier to build an engine properly than bodge it and whoever it was that rebuilt that engine should be ashamed of themselves.

*Of course, you will have to buy the certificate and a T-shirt.:)

  15. Do it..it really is a simple engine. I really enjoyed it and you learn an awful lot of how it all works.

PDF of Bentley on a tablet.. just in case you also need to Google/Latebay too . The paper version is still quite expensive often

Jake Raby video helpfull but annoying in that he has lots of new clean things to put back together and not check old stuff to see if it's still in spec and re-use.

And as said before lots is photos and bags and labels for the bits, and a clean set of bags for after its all washed...

Stock is less decision making than going up in size

I bagged all my bits still covered in oil to avoid corrosion, in case the rebuild takes a little longer than expected

Erm... I think I'm into year 3 now, but finally got some enthusiasm back - just as it's turning colder

  17. Yeah, it needs to come apart...that bearing alone...Then all that goo...stuff broken off the case.

It was rebuilt by an angry gorilla.

  18. @Chrisd bought one really cheap from me. Watching his efforts with interest.

    So, progress since last update.

All the bits and bobs are off other than heads etc. I'm now slowly taking the sealant off before tackling the rockers, heads etc. The pictures show the before I've started to remove the gunk. I'll post some after shots later or over the next few days.

How they managed to get sealant everywhere, even on the rocker valves I don't know. You name it it's covered.
