Oil leak, looks like OS Rocker Cover

  1. Morning all

Noticed a pool of oil under Arthur this morning, had a squizz and it seems to be leaking from the offside rocker cover.

I changed this at Tekenders and fitted new gaskets, liberal coating of grease, rocker cover fits well and tight.

What should I be checking for when I take the cover off to refit?

  2. seals

  3. seals on push rod tubes as well?

  4. Make sure the rocker covers fitted correctly, I took mine off to set up the timing and when I put it back on it wasn't seated properly and oil started pi**ing it everywhere!
I changed the gasket and now the blooming oil is comin out of the pushrods seals, grrrrr.
Luckily I've got a type four and can change these whilst the engine is fitted, phew! Good luck :)

What were the replacement seals like?
Some suppliers use seals which are mostly rubber, with a few flecks of cork in: These are rubbish! If you used these replace them for the high cork content ones and jobs a good'un.

  6. Got mine from JK, only cos they were the only ones that had a relay i was after in stock at the time.
They were made from cork I'm sure.

The last lot I got from JK were rubbish. I changed them 4 times on the way back from tekenders. Theyve probably changes supplier by now though.

  9. These were JK (cork) ones but I fitted both sides at the same time and the NS is fine. It was my first go, so I'm thinking I wasn't as slap happy with the grease as I maybe should have been.

Will get new ones on this week and see if it makes any difference, fingers crossed.

  10. I always fit gaskets dry, and never have any issues...

Both surfaces have to be free from dirt and clean of oil tho...

Same as Paul but I always fit from the bottom and push up in a hope that the seal sits level and doesn't move. Many services and all good. Only had one leak when I didn't push up from the bottom. Perhaps it's now superstition

  15. I was once told rubbing a bar of soap along both faces of the gaskets prevents them from leaking but ive never tried it

  18. dont know what engine you are running but type 4 engine rocker covers can go on either way up and this can cause a leak.
i know that some people swear by greasing them and others like everything to be clean. personally i like to use a non setting sealant that is meant for surface fit gearbox cases. it keeps the oil back and doesnt set rock hard so you cant get it off again.
its down to personal choice and you will find what works best for you and your bus

  19. I buy the Scat neoprene/ cork ones. They awlays give a good seal. I fit mine with a smear of grease.
