  1. I was meaning the actual £££££ !

I know you did but that’s between the Speedshop and Rosko, he has the quote. It won’t be cheap.:)

  3. Yes I know that, but some people don't mind sharing the costs.
    No harm in asking.

  4. To be honest the current exchange rate would make it sound a bit over the odds in £s so, without getting into detail, they're charging me for 25-30 hours labour on top of the price of the parts. That seems reasonable to me and all the work is guaranteed for a year. Hourly rates aren't cheap over here but I know from my own work that half of what you charge ends up being paid in social charges and pension contributions so I'm OK with how the bill will look. Wish I wasn't having to pay it but it does look fair.

  5. You're not wrong in so far as they do like some high revs, I got a lift in the shop Beetle and it wasn't like any Beetle I've been in before! That said, they know my preference is for a decently quick everyday engine rather than anything outrageous, a bit more torque and power would be great but I won't be racing anybody with it.

  6. After much looking around and Raby's 'camper special' cam only being sold on a package basis from Type 4 in the states, I went 73/86 .for reasons as above. and made up my own rest of kit.. springs , swivel foot adjusters valves

I think this was an earlier version of the camper special which is a bit secret as to the spec

    How do you find it?

  8. Early days yet only had two local runs out .. and lost half my oil on one of those!.. if the weather holds out long enough I'll have another go at carbs soon get more confidence in the van having had to sort electrics and brakes and then venture onto a bigger roads to open up a bit more

  10. Thanks for the offer Westy but I'm going to stick with their stuff. Basically for the sole reason that I'm getting a guarantee which is based on everything being brand new and from their suppliers. I'm sure the parts you've got are excellent and if I was doing it myself I'd be taking you up on this but, as I'm paying them for the work and the other parts, sticking with everything being guaranteed makes sense.

With lockdown starting again it wouldn’t be too easy to get the parts to you anyway.

I don’t want to know how much, I know what I spent building my Type 4, but I’d be interested to know what spec your engine is.

  12. Lost half your oil?

Did you get @Rosko to change your sump plug?

  15. That's true, most things will slow right down so it would probably have been a right pain getting them here.

Spec is below, there are all the seals etc that you'd expect too but no point in listing them. My understanding is that it'll add some torque and work well in town and on country roads. I don't do much motorway driving because it seems a waste to pay tolls so i can go 130kmh when I'll only usually be going 90ish anyway!

Sorry for the French everybody except Westy!

That should be a nice engine and it will be interesting to hear how it performs with small valve 2.0l heads, a fairly long duration cam and 40mm carbs. It could do with more capacity.:)

  19. I'll let you know, should certainly be a lot better than it was and I'm now more excited about it than gutted about the cost! With any luck I'm going to find out sooner than I thought - judging by some pics they sent they're using lockdown to crack on....
