  1. I was in a bit of a mess to be fair... I did it on Saturday. But could only go back today ... I'm so gutted...

Sorry to see that, it must be a horrible feeling. Let's just hope that it's not as bad as it first looks and can be repaired without too much cost.

Gutting... I’m another of those serial stick waggling, clutch pressing, neurotic peeps... even in the auto!

on the few occasions I do start stood outside the van I go super OCD and check more than once!

hopefully the repair isn’t too horrendous!

  5. Damn, that hurts :(
And that front nose looked pretty solid.

I was so gutted with mine I was sure I would have to paint it, In a panick I got a big sanding block and run it over it to see the damage. When it turned out I could beat it out I ended up spending neatly as much time rubbing the sanding marks out!!

We've all done it and got away with it. Hell of a dent though!

  12. I'm trying to imagine how that must feel and it's just too painful to even think about ☹️.

I'm the same as those above, was always taught to depress the clutch whilst starting to eliminate any drag in the gearbox. Not so sure that's such a good idea with a T1 engine though as I don't like the idea of all that pressure on the crank thrust bearing before the oil pressure's up.

I'm going to be extra mindful whenever I start mine in the garage now as the nose is about an inch behind the up and over metal door. Pretty sure if mine did that it'd take the door out and my daily parked the other side.

Hopefully now the dust's settled you have a plan and can get it sorted without too much further stress. Will you speak to your insurance company or just get on and fix it yourself?

  13. I went to recover a car that was now scrap as he had bounced of every kerb down the road. He said it wont start now. It was parked by a puddle so instead of getting wet I put it in gear to turn it over to get it out the puddle. It started on the key and nearly ran in the back of my truck ha ha.

I've related this before so a short version.
I had the handbrake on hard and in gear after rear hubnut action.
    Serviced the engine.
Leant in the window and turned key, van lurched onto my foot.
Couldn't reach handbrake so I had to repeat twice to get my foot out each time turning it off fast in case it started and drove off on it's own.

  18. I mentioned this earlier, I certainly try not to do it on the Bug, but given modern cars won't start without the clutch depressed, it's a difficult habit to break.

Best of luck getting it fixed
