  4. First thing I do when getting in a car, or van, is wiggle the gear stick. It’s a habit I’ve got over the last 53 years of driving. I even do it in my current car, which is automatic

I think that on this occasion bypassing the swear filter is justified, even in the title!!!

  7. It's quite surprising how powerful that VW starter motor is :(

I did similar rushing off the ferry last summer, luckily the car behind had already gone, otherwise my rear would match your front.

I’ve decided it isn’t, as it’s a bit of a sore point at the moment :hattip:

That might just beat out. The crease above the headlight looks the most awkward.

  11. Except there's the airbox behind it :(

  12. Yes it wasn't a good day... went to fire it up as it's in storage for the winter.. was talking to a friend I was stood outside the van.. turned the key it fired up n drove into the back of a range rover.. the range won ....

  14. Yes, this is good practice and my daily won't even start unless the clutch is depressed. However, I have been told, on a type 1 engine, this practice puts extra stress on the crank and can contribute to premature end float. Equally, you shouldn't sit idling with the clutch depressed, drop it into neutral.

Hmmm, there might be enough space between the duct thing and the front panel to get to the crease above the light. The bit covered by the airbox doesn't look too bad and might pull with weld on pins and a slide hammer. Otherwise you'd have to unpick the airbox and weld it back afterwards. All depends how good the front panel is and whether it's worth saving I suppose. Just thinking aloud.

    Woops. ..

I bought a cut of a new front panel repair from Alan Schofields at the last ever Dubfreeze. I had to buy it because it was £20. It went up to just level with the bottom of the air box.
I think what happens is more people want the usually rotten window surround part , so they chop that off the panel, and sell the bottom half to people cheaply.

You would still need to sort the creases above the air box but it might be worth talking to Schofields to see if they have another.

(if that had been my bus, the spare wheel would have gone in and done more damage and the rotten bits at the bottom would have split.. , and the headlight bowls would just fall out.
Yours looks like a depressingly sound panel before that)
