  1. Take some pics or video of how you're finding Tdc on #1

To make up for the carbs being set wrong, your pal has advanced the timing. He must have - advancing the timing will speed up the tickover, delaying it will slow it down. All good and harmless until you drive it at which point the engine will overheat until eventually a hole will burn in a piston, valve seats regress into the head, rings seize in the barrels or the oil thin until the bearings seize. Far from harmless tinkering, I hope you didn't go far or fast.

Set the timing to the book then speed up the idling with the big screw on top of the left hand carb.

  4. That's exactly what he did and I went 2 miles that's it !! Oh dear oh dear sounds nasty ill set it up correct as u have told me with the manual then set carbs !!

Two miles probably did no harm, but your description of it going ok, then being gutless doesn't bode well. As a parallel "hope it's all good and carry on" - if you have points, check the gap hasn't closed up, then set the timing.
Engine needs to be cool to set the valve gaps, but stone cold isn't neccessary or VW wouldn't have been able to service them without taking 2 days over it. My own experimentation shows a couple of hours cooling is more than enough.

  6. Been sat over night all I can think of is I'm not getting correct tdc and btc this em setting wrong ! And never even looked at points I'm gonna tackle this wiring this morning then engine strip and start again cheers u guys

Too small points gap = gutless.
Carbs out of sync = gutless rough running.
Check a few things like this before you strip the engine would be my advice.

  10. ^^^ This.....I only said stone cold for emphasis.....i should've said: it's late, you're tired, you've had a sh*t day, you're not 100% what's wrong, go to bed, check tappets in the morning:D

I take it you do have a timing scale and not assuming TDC is at the "top" of the pulley. ;)

  12. That's right, I was just offering it as a 'stop fecking around with it when its warm' ;)

Does sound like its been cooked.

I can't remember, was this one you'd built up yourself daisy from an case up?

My guess is you've got your distributor drive shaft and therefore distributor located in the 'wrong' position, but you're setting everything up based on where you think #1 firing position 'should' be.

That's why I say you need to establish where #1 firing position actually is, from there its straight forward to setup
    :)

  13. I never touched the long block not stripped case at all as was running but looking back through old pics and I have a ca engine case and a cj fan housing so I just got tdc in a different marks to the fan mark !! I assumed when I checked it it was close to that mark that's it maybe po changed fan ? So just setting up as ur video and gonna do btc allso as I guess this mark will allso be wrong tool pics so if it don't work I can post em u guys r brill I'll get it if it kills me !! And u !!

  14. good luck with it.....It can be very frustrating.....especially when it feels like it's one thing after another.....
Remember the TDC tool trick....pencil down no.1 plug hole (or feel for compression with your thumb)....no 1 inlet valve rocking....you know for sure then

  15. It will get there, mine always does with the help on here

It better make VolksWorld, this van is on my list to see, so get yourself moving :p

What did you actually set the timing to before matey advanced it?

  17. They're all the same. The fan housing has nothing to so with it. The fan has a groove on it, as per your posts a couple of months ago you couldn't find it, so did you find it or just guess? You need the timing scale...

I don't know what you mean by btdc mark will be wrong too? There isn't one... Or are you talking about the numbers in the timing scale?

Take some pics, its hard to give you advice blind and it just sounds like you're digging yourself into even more of a mess

  18. Right I ignored mark on fan dropped screw drives down #1 watched it rise and fall by turned pulley nut and got it in the middle or rise and fall made tip ex mark not were other mark was ? Then did same on #2 made tiny tip ex mark used marks for #3 and #4 and set timing with my gun 7.5* set points as per Haynes manual ran up road best it's ever been ever !!!
Worrying that #2 &#4 exhaust valve seems to be right at the ends of the thread on screw just enough to tighten a bit these were the 2 that came loose so could it be inside cam things I'm guessing ?? I'll try it now round block a bit let cool down check gaps but does this sound wrong ?

  19. Stop running the engine!!!!

You've got the valves all set wrong. You're just fecking it even more every time you run it!

    Take some photos FFS!
    :D

  20. this it how i found tdc #1 turned pully this came to top and went down got it in the middle of the 2 o1.jpg
