Did you put any rust prevention type stuff down the tubes? Mist it with oil? Wax? And a new steering pin bit?

Nope. You’ll be filling it with grease once all the leaves are all fitted.

Ok. Thanks. Didn’t realise the whole of the tubes were completely filled. I know when I Jack it up and grease mine, that I stop when the grease comes out it the ends. So how many tubes does it take to completely fill the beam?

They're not, or don't need to be, just grease it normally, it's the bearings you are greasing.

Sorry. Thrown by the words ‘filling it with grease’.
You think it will be worth changing the needle bearings out and the steering pin, for new?

I always presumed that the beam was full of grease…. It always seems to take plenty to make grease come out of the ends.
I would think that any additional work to the beam will be easier while it’s off.
It would make sense to change “consumable “ parts … I certainly would.

I'd replace the idler pin bushes, but the needle bearings are likely ok and much more of a job to replace.
To find out how much play you have, assuming the bearing surfaces on your arms are good, slip them in and give them a waggle. You don't need the torsion springs fitted to do this.

Yes. The guy at VW FBI, says the bearings are usually ok. I’ll know more, when it arrives.
    Thanks.

  13. From memory, there are also nylon bushes in the ends of the beam, which you can't get replacements for. Best not to fiddle.

Thank you. Saves more confusion on my behalf.
So what is part no. 13?

Bearing seals methinks. If you pump grease through the nipples on the beam the excess exudes from the blips on either side. Keeping your front beam well greased can't be stressed enough.
