I have a 79 VW Bus, and in the very new future I want to swap out the rear drum brakes for a set of rear disks. I know I've seen a few kits around the internet, but I'm more interested in pulling the parts I need from the junkyards, or even fabricating carriers if I have to. Any ideas for the rear? What type of cars should I look for in the junkyards? Mk4's? Mk3's? What have you guys done to make this work? I'd like to keep my stock wheels and bolt patterns. Also for the front? Any Junkyard upgrades I can do? Thanks!
It's pointless cat. And bye bye hundreds of £'s. Reason? There's a device that stops pressure to rear wheels under heavy braking on your bay to stop you ending up arse first into a hedge. Heavy rear braking = death. People do it, but I reckon it's completely pointless as the moment you get the rear brakes locking the compensator switches them off.
Gotta agree with zeddo, uprate the fronts if you must but rear drums are fine - how fast and powerful is your bus? there's guys running porche/subaru engines with rear drums..... well maintained disc/drum combo is fine.
I've servoed my early and it doesn't have the compensator. I am worried as it locks up when you rest your foot on the pedal. I think I might fit one for piece of mind, but I deffo wouldn't want to up-rate the rear brakes as they lock up as it stands. Locking rear brakes = spinning vehicle disaster on the roads.
A 944 turbo is a light vehicle. Your bus is heavy. Your bus will dip at the front far more under heavy braking and so the weight will come off the back, the wheels will lock and you'll end up in the hedge. But I'm guessing you still have the compensator in the circuit? If yes, the effort will be taken off the rear wheels under heavy braking anyway so you might as well have saved your money and kept the drums. I can't see how you can win this arguement without admitting you're happy to go rear end first through a hedge or into the oncoming traffic. ;D
944 comes in at 1330kg... light by most stds, but my van is a microbus... so weight wise they come in close I do still have the compensator, and I've done plenty of heavy braking, and I've definitely not gone through any hedges backwards... so your argument sucks
