As you know I think you should find somewhere to paint it youself Carl, you're doing all the stuff that makes the difference between a good and bad job anyway! If you're not confident, do the prep and masking, find a venue and pay a painter by the hour. You could do the hb primer and flat it yourself, then get a pro to do the top coat. Cheap as chips.

Powder coating is great, I recognise some of those parts. :) your van will look a treat with all the details attended to as you have.

  3. Cheers mate, yeah tbh i'm not expecting a show quality paint job. And i know its not going to be arrow straight. Ill high build and flatten it myself then do the inside. Then depending how that goes, go from there.
I think i'll be ok to do it, time will tell. Lol

Also... Does anyone have any tips for re-assembling the poptop struts?
I'll be sticking new springs in the freshly powdercoated bits and
    1. Dont want to scratch them up.
    2. Dont want to lose a finger.

    Looking good so far :hattip:

  7. yea, I took mine apart  .....not fun getting them back together :D

I re-painted mine but had trouble getting the struts back together as the paint was too thick, so I'd advise trying them together before you put the greased springs in.

I did end up scratching mine a little :(

not easy to get them back together, I cant remember who, but someone made a tool up to compress the struts, think it was a threaded bar which was some how bolted to the ends of the struts, with nuts on the bar. when the nuts were tightened, it compressed the struts safely.

I used brute force :D by pushing them together against a wall .......I did shoot one of the struts across my workshop when I slipped and let go

  8. ah ok so basically, brute force pushing it against a wall, i can get someone else to tighten the bolts lol.

You can squash them with a ratchet strap.

  16. Then got a skim of filler over it and then the dolphin glaze over both sides. The roof just needs a bit more old paint removing and it's ready for primer i think.
