Gotta love a bit of google cache!! Here is my Westy that i bought in America and I brought back to the UK with me when I was posted back. Before shipping it to the UK and while i had a huge garage, I replaced the front beam and all shocks all round and front brakes. also replaced all the brake flexi hoses. painted the wheels and fitted new tyres. fitted some vanagon front seats with a view to recovering them in westy green plaid. Stripped the interior out for a spruce up. The cat overseeing things (RIP she has died now grand old age of 15 which is about 82 in Cat years!) Bit of a leak from the kitchen caused this i think. Bit of surface rust but nothing a wire wheel and a lick of kurust wont cure. quite impressed with the lack of rust overall Engine wise i replaced the crappy centre mount weber progressive with fuel injection from a 78. (virtually the same) i also collected lots of FI spares as they are heard to get here in the UK it seems. If anyone needs help with Fuel Injection i am willing to lend a hand, not an expert but i do have first hand experience. I will try and get some more pics up asap.
More progress on the interior: I cleaned the floor with soapy water. I made a new bed front and as I was missing the door anyway and will be redoing the electrics, I made it doorless. Cleaned up the floor with a wire wheel and then Kurust'd and painted the patches with white hammerite. Just need to get a new subfloor in and i can refit the bed properly. And a money shot pic.
bit more rust prevention and secured the battery for the MOT. Kurusted all this as it was mainly just surface rust, apart from the rusty hole where the rear side marker light goes. A PO had put a new piece of metal down to replace a rotten battery tray. seems to be holding up OK and will hopefully stay that way now i have treated it a bit. Hammerite battery hold down
I have re-done the floor finally....I couldn't find big sheets of plywood and hardboard so I had to use multiple smaller sheets. I used 2 layers of 6mm ply and 1 layer of 4mm ply on top so it is nice and sturdy and tight up against all the edges. Here are some pics: I also stripped the veneer off the side cupboards, it pretty much came off in one piece with the help off the iron(while the wife was out), as we will probably just stain all the wood or just put clear on it.
refitted the headbanger cabinet so it is not in the way anymore fitted a lights on warning buzzer so when the lights are left on and the doors are open the buzzer goes off. finished fitting the electric washer bottle and it works fine apart from a bit of a leak at one of the fittings so will be replacing all of the rubber hoses as no doubt they are slightly perished!! fitted the other rear lapbelt so it now takes 4 people legally. however still need to sort something for our third child!! broke the aerial as it had rusted through where the big nut attaches the aerial to the body.(need to get a new one now!!)
Well that was a the last years stuff in a few posts thanks to google cache. I will update agai later with what I am going to do to get it looking perfect.
UPS came this afternoon and delivered my new exhaust. Only ordered it yesterday from VW Heritage. removed the old one and fitted the new one in less than an hour!! gotta love working on these old vehicles.
been out for a drive and the new exhaust is hardly noticeable, its very quiet. the tailpipe exits on the opposite side to the old one so it is probably quieter from that mainly.
VW Heritage second parcel arrived today and so I now have the ability to flash my headlights due to a new relay and a bit of extra wiring. Also i have fitted new heater control handles and new heater tubes in the engine bay. Also fitted a new headlight switch as the old one was a bit flakey as the dimmer control was knackered. you can see the silver 4 terminal relay here. pointing to the new black 5 terminal relay New paper/cardboard aux heater fan tubes
