Its possible that if its not a stamped etc trailer that it will fail an mot anywho, they are only gonna check when its on the back of a car so unless the owner has a certificate then it must be illegal, I think it is all trailers, this testing of trailers in themselves is causing manufacturers headaches too, most if not all trailers are built and plated, never tested, so Im sure that now manufacturers are having to test them to plate them, I big trailer manufacturing place has closed near to me in the last year citing the new testing as his reason

  2. if you took the towing ball off and moved the plug socket up on the chassie would this be classed as cheating

  3. nope, but if you`ve got 7 pin the wiring has got to look intact & secure.13 pin has to be tested.
i`ve recently been on a 5 yearly refresher course for class 4 & nothing at all was mentioned about plans to test trailers in the future.unless the dvla are planning on inspecting/registering every trailer how the hell is this going to work.

i really don't understand why people are flapping about trailer electrics, if you are running 7 pin for a trailer only and not 2 sockets (fridges reverse lights etc) or a 13 pin it's only 6 wires on a bay as the blue fog light wire isn't needed, you have an earth so that's 5, 2 indicators brake lights and 2 sides..... easy peasy.

  5. Not wanting to hijack the thread but is it easy to switch my 7 pin to a 13 ... just that my bike rack is 13 pin and the adaptor always a bit wobbly, making less than reliable. I was going to use my parents old trailer might regrease the wheel bearings but hadnt thought of getting it MOT'd ;)

  6. Problem with this tho is that there will be loads of trailers that aren't tagged... I have one... So if it becomes illegal I'll be a grand out of pocket :(
Unless the dvla/vosa offer a tagging scheme then a lot of people will be up in arms

  8. Ok so every trailer, including home built must have a 'chassis' number by law. This comes into effect when the MOT testings are finalised. And will be an MOT failure without one. DVLA/VOSA will be controlling all chassis numbers and checking MOT status.

  9. So im going to have to have a chassis number stamped into my homemade trailer?
If i do who issues the number and will i have to pay?
Will i have to display a trailer numberplate on my trailer so the police/anpr cameras can verify it has a chassis number and has passed a trailer mot?
Whats to stop people just cloning the identity of another home made trailer on the road?

All seems like a nightmare implimenting all this if it comes into force and no doubt it will be the motorist who will be stupming up to pay for it all
Whats next after the trailer mot trailer tax?

In holland they have it and its quite simple all braked trailers have its own number plate same as any other vehicle if you build one it has to be type approved same as a new one or a kitcar.

    I welcome it
It scares me seeing the state of some of the caravans and other big trailers that fly past you on the motorway knowing that they just hook them up each year with no checks.

As i understand it its only in a discussion point same as all the other nonsense that flys around, like the one about banning you from changing your oil at home that flew around a few years ago.
I am sure something will come in at some point but i am not going to lose sleep until its looks real and then it will be a shadow of what they talk about.

    some info

basically its big trailers over 3.5 ton that carry goods will need a mot type test

    But for all new trailers
From 29 October 2012 onwards, new trailers will need to be approved. This means that a government agency will need to sanction the design of new trailers before sales can begin.
    (Type approval)

Alternatively, specialised trailers built in low numbers can be assessed individually after they have been built. This is done by the Vehicle Operator Services Agency (VOSA), under an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA)
    (same as kitcars)

For trailers which are not subject to an annual test, because they are small (under 3500kg gross weight) or not used to carry goods, it will be mandatory from October 2012 for the person retailing the trailer to the public to keep records of every trailer sold for 10 years, and these records must include details of the type approval Certificate of Conformity or Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) certificate which covers the

So if you build one you started it before Oct ;)

  14. Every trailer, irrespective of size and load capacity will require a yearly mot, same as a yearly service.

Bottom line, if something goes wrong with the trailer and you kill someone you will be up for manslaughter and prison.

I have the same issue, as I service trailers and fit towbars, if someone gets killed from a unit I serviced I'm up for corporate manslaughter.

  15. Im getting conflicting information here

Im sure when this is implimented there will be a big advertising campaign as it will effect so many

  16. Out of interest where did you source that info matty?

  17. In Holland, they still think leather trousers are fashionable, so I wouldn't trust their opinion...

Got it all on the VOSA website

    http://www.dft.gov.uk/vca/additiona...vice-for-companies-manufacturing-trailers.pdf

    Iva information
http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/repository/Guide to the Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) Scheme.pdf

I also searched goggle i could not find any info backing up the idea of MOTs for all trailers now or due to come in soon , i am sure if it was there would be lots of info and a publicity drive.

As in one of my outer posts i welcome it for braked trailers and caravans as the size of them and the speed they are towed at is scary when you think they are dragged out of the field and no checks are made.

  19. Don't forget it's not coming into force till next year and I'm only regurgitating what my bosses have told me. you know, the ones who have been in the biz 25 years. ;)

Time will tell but i am so surprised that there is no info out there not even from VOSA.

Could you get him to give you some evidence as this could have a big impact
