Christ on a bike.....I started reading this and thought I'd be splitting the case again!! Sooooooo glad I'm taking a million pics as I go along. Hope you get it sorted ASAP mate. Btw, did you know she did a fast taxi the other week?
We did a double take pics is the way to cross reference! Yeah I knew about the fast taxi, Im on the Facebook group for her I think the guys are doing an anti det run fairly soon, I need to get back up at some point, see whats been happening!!
In between us having crankshaft bearing issues, we got stuck in with mounting the cam gear onto the camshaft and checking the bolts against the oil pump Sorted! Cam gear bolted down and torqued up to 18lbs ft cam gear bolts to oil pump clearance is ~0.2mm I ran a dial gauge on the cam gear, it ran spot on, 0.06mm variation as it was rotated!
77 westy told us earlier about the mod VW carried out to assist the piston cooling by notching the conrod at the top by 1.5mm..we thought it a good idea too Angle plate set up on the Bridgeport, small 4mm diameter cutter and jobs a good un
Now back to the matter of the incorrectly drilled bearing. We have got the weekend to have a think about what to do! BigRich has been really helpful and phoned round trying to source a set of Silverline or Mahle bearings with 0.75mm/std/std sizes, no one has them including Stateside - there are no lead times on delivery either.. We have two choices, one is get a set ordered and wait for them to be delivered two, redrill the hole as there is plenty of meat between the incorrect hole and the actual oil gallery on the right hand case half (TES who reground the crank suggested it, Jim at Stateside said it is do able as a worse case scenario). In reality, we don't think it should be a problem re drilling as the bearing is a full one, its got a smaller one close by and when lubricated correctly it theoretically shouldn't see any high stress..we are open to suggestion here!
Hmm the bolt head was reduced by just over a mm, when we measured the gap, there wasn't any gaskets fitted
Yep you did!!! We wanted a consensus of drilling it will be fine v don't do it..the vote is cast at two of you for drilling Drilling it is I think - I will mull it over some more though
The bearings are wrong. Get new correct ones sent out free of charge and fit them. Drill the others for spares.
yep, they are 0.75/std/std which is spot on. The #3 main bearing (one before the small fan hub end) has its dowel peg and oilway hole correct for the left hand case half but the right hand case half oil hole is an inch out of line!
Following on from the incorrectly drilled bearing situation, its now drilled correctly; we set the old bearing up in the dividing head on the old faithful Bridgeport, took notes on where the dowel hole was, the closest oil gallery hole and used these positions as our initial reference points on the x - y display. Lined the new bearing up and voila, sorted! Pilot hole To size:
