She's a work in progress, photos hide all the little rough bits...

Just in the process of putting together a new motor, and I'm recon-ing a new box for it...

Mid clean on the new block

I'll have some more updates as the motor goes together... as I picked the block up from the machine shop after getting the block rebored for 1st oversize pistons

  3. i like a nice mk 2 O0

  4. Nice! Look forward to this!

  5. I've got the exhaust all buttoned up... just need to road test it now, and see how noisy it is at motorway speeds.... no muffler, so it is louder when you rev it

    Pictures tomorrow

  7. rickyrooo1

rickyrooo1 Hanging round like a bad smell

i'm no expert, but i doubt you need to run it along the road to know it's noisy..............

  8. turbo engines (especially diesels) are pretty quiet due to the turbo muffling the exhaust...

but the reason I wanted to road test it, is that I've gone from mild steel to stainless, and stainless resonates differently to mild!!

Went out for a spin earlier, and all is good :D

  9. Amazingly there is no notable increase in exhaust noise at maintained road speeds... only time it's any louder, is when you're giving it a bootfull

I Ordered a tin of Por15 engine enamel the other day, as I wanted some colour on the cast block... And I finally got round to the final clean on the block before paint today

How it looked when I first stripped it down

Back from the machine shop, and a final clean from me

Engine code - those in the know, GTDs should be SB code, I was lucky when I bought this unseen & unknown from a breakers yard!!

First coat of enamel on... it's a bit on the thin side, so putting it on too thick equates to runs everywhere... was pretty hard to not get runs putting it on this thin!!

What do you recon to the colour? I fancied something a bit different to the factory black/silver/green

  10. Looks good, I'm thinking about a mk2 GTD as a daily driver :)

  11. Nice alternative to a GTi

Mine was quite clearly a base model GTD, as I've had to add a few bits to it (rev counter) but it's a nice motor, was doing almost 50mpg when I first got it... gone down quite a lot now as it'd had some issues, plus it's done 190k now

Also it's got the city box in it, as opposed to the motorway box, so 70mph is 3600rpm... 60mph is 3000rpm... whereas the motorway box is 70mph @ 2800rpm

I've got the 4T motorway box, in bits, waiting on me ordering a new bearing set for it!!

There's a few GTDs that come up on ebay... 1 a month or so

You've got to love a Golf.

I took a customers big bumper 1.8 auto back today. As solid as a rock and reminded me of my old Driver except this had auto and PAS. I'd forgotten how small those front doors were. Made me chuckle. And then l got back into a bag of spanners 206 that will soon be scrap. Didn't have a patch of class on the much older Golf.

Look after those great little cars.

  15. Sweet 8)

If you need a hand with anything, just shout and I'll point you in the right direction

I've as yet to drive a car that has as much feel as the old Golf!!

  16. Pulled the new (old) 1.9 head off the shelf tonight... Thought I may as well give it a good going over before I'm ready for it!!

Stripped, and in need of a clean!!

    looking a bit better now!!

Gave the mating surface a clean
    [IMG]

And spotted that all 4 injector ports are cracked

So I'll have to give my machine shop a call on Monday, see if they can pull the ports and fit new ones...
Also needs 8 new guides, but that's not too much of a hardship!!

  20. So after doing a bit of research, cracked ports on the 1.9 head are real common, and the general consensus is to not worry about them!!

A bit of a photo mock up ;)
