  1. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

  2. What the best way to resolve a sticky valve?? And keep it from re occurring?

  3. Engine pictures as promised.

  4. I would start with the basics .. A new decent set of leads for a start ,yours look a bit higledy pigledy and not really fitted right , check points ,timing , dizzy code ? dizzy orientation ? valve clearances . ensure no vaccum leaks including servo , twin carbs ! are they balanced ....

What are they setting the timing at ?

  5.
  6. I'll take a video tomorrow if forum allows. Other than that some more pics

^ no problem there mate - feel free!

  8. Extra photo for the left side...........

  9. Sorry can't get photos to upload.........

Illdoit............the red wire from the coil/condenser goes the the split relay for leisure battery and the grey and green, to the back of engine, it's now pouring with rain, I look again when it stop.

  10. I think that the grey wire goes to electronic ignition, should be 2 boxes one of them is idle stabiliser (with two round plugs) you need to disconnect them and plug them together then set timing.

  11. Thanks everyone for your advice.

The way forward "I think" is to replace all the ignition, and then we can take stock. So Distributer (looks original, but does not move, it's firm), leads, plugs, condenser/coil, then rebalance/check carbs and re-time.

The garage is just ordering parts now. Anything else for the list........lol

  12. Personally i would avoid buying a new dizzy as its all chinese rubbish now , if you have time get yours rebuilt ! I`ll look out who did mine ,think it was a week turn around ..

  13. here is their e mail "ignitionsolutions@tiscali.co.uk"

It will come back like new , Oldvolkshome site list all the dizzys and which engine they fit so may be worth checking yours is correct code before rebuild if you chose to get it rebuilt

  14. Good idea, I'll check with the garage.............I presumed that they exchanged the old, for a recon built in this country...........as my Dad used to do in the 1970s...........as a kid I loved going to Speedy Spares in hove.

  15. It's now been resolved..........at last

Thanks for all your advice, should of taken your advice sooner. I've changed from one "expert garage" to another.

The over heating was down to the previous garages lack of knowledge (they've been specialist for 20 years...lol)
All tappets out, Electronic chokes - one jammed open, Carbs not balanced properly, so rich - the fuel would of destroyed the rings.

The lack of power problem, was down to the previous garage not understanding Automatic gearbox throttle set-up (and messed up linkage)
It's in two parts. Basically I was only getting 70% throttle.........lol........and they'd played so much with the cable, it was about to snap.

Oil leaks.......they changed the tappets gaskets and pushrod seals twice, it leaked 1 litre of oil within 60miles
The new "experts" felt the push rods were never done, due to the push rod tubes were covered in months of road dirt.
The gaskets were not fitted correctly, when "first expert" tightened the bolts it squeezed the seals out.............simple stupid mistakes.
It now only leaks from the lay shaft seal they replace (first expert), but of course the engine has to come out to rectify that leak.

I still can't believe how much I paid the "first" garage. The "new garage experts" so know their stuff. Sorted it out so quickly.

I will not name and shame..........Just hope they read this and learn........

  16. Unfortunately the story has re started................lol

Yes all the bits mentioned have been sorted by the new garage, then we broke down in Devon last week.
I put the bus into reverse, there was a bang and whizz. No drive. The recovery man and garage thought it was something simple. (drive shaft??)
They managed to look today, it's not. As well as all the other seals the last garage cocked up on, it seems the torque converter was incorrectly done as well.
They think the long drive to Devon (200miles) ran auto box dry. Last ditched hope tomorrow........it may be blocked oil pump in Auto box. Replenish oil, may work. Not hopeful.

Does anyone have a spare auto box??

The Garage "the good garage" Is Dougs VW weeks in Angmering West Sussex. Doug and Martin know their stuff.

  17. I should imagine that it's killed the torque converter as opposed to the box!!

  18. Lets hope it's a torque converter......

The only up is, if it needs rebuilding it could be re geared to a type 3 autobox, giving more speed.

Lets see what the morning brings.
