  2. i should have all the clips... shouldn't i?

  3. I used new ones, they can come off damaged.

Edit: I could be wrong, but I think you'll be fine with R9.

Edit edit, sure someone quoted me this one here about fuel clips but it also explains the hose grades. http://www.volksbolts.com/faq/fuelhose.htm

  4. From the web page.

The R6/7/8 Standards represent the drive to cut vapour emissions on carburatted cars in the 1980s & 1990s, with the R9 Standard building on this to cater for the introduction of fuel injection and bio-enhanced fuels.

It can be seen that R9 fuel hose that has been DESIGNED to work with modern fuels has less than 3% of the permitivity of 1980s & 1990s fuel hose. It even out performs the "A1" (ISO 7840) hosing mandated for use in the MARINE environment, where they are hugely stringent about fire-safety.! (See graph below)

    What’s standard fuel hose?

    Me.:)
In theory SAE J30R9 fuel should be resistant to ethanol and should last well, in practice 2 or 3 years and often less, is a typical life. 100% bio fuel tolerant hose is better and doesn’t cost much more.

  9. just spoken to peter; R9 is ok but a couple of years ago they changed the ethanol (?) and it degrades the r9 lines quicker. Am now searching for the 100% stuff in 5.6mm.

The lines inside the engine bay are ok and a different size - peter says (cos he knows everything - fact) that the one under the tank always goes first.

I've also got him on standby for a pre-techenders check over of trevor as he was resistant to being kidnapped, bundled in the bug and locked into the workshop on top of the world. :D

  12. You probably need 7.6 for the carbs.

Thanks @77 Westy, will investigate that stuff myself.

The link is up there^ and 100% bio fuel resistant hose and hose kits are available from https://www.vwaircooledworks.co.uk/Fuel-Hose-Kit---Full-details.html

  15. thank you folks.

I forgot to ask peter about the size hose for carbs and now he's not picking up because he's probably working on @paulcalf's bus

will order from AFS 5.5mm (1 metre) and the 7.6mm for the carbs but no idea how much - 2m?

I'm also working so have to keep dropping off the forum  and make important calls to yonkers *looks busy and important*

The problem with worm drive clips is that people frequently use the wrong size and tighten them until they grip the hose, then they post pics of a distorted hose and warnings about not using Jubilee clips. And so the myth goes on.

The fact is neither the nut and bolt or the worm drive clips exert an even pressure around the hose, but either type is adequate and if the correct size clip is used it doesn’t matter what type you use. The hose must be the correct size for the tail too and that’s something else people get wrong – the hose must be slightly smaller than the tail.

  17. thank you! what is a kunifer hard line?

Will i need the small or large in-line filter? https://www.advancedfluidsolutions....-fuel-filter---6mm--8mm-hose-tails-3131-p.asp

apologies for all the questions, i've never touched fuel stuff on either of my vw's simply because i want to be able to trust the work done.

    what are tails?

and if i were to buy hose from AFS - what clips/size would i need for 5.5mm hose?

yes, i am this crap today - some days less so :)

Kunifer is a material, it’s a metal pipe not a hose but easy to bend.

I’m guessing you’ll fit the filter close to the tank outlet, so 6mm.

Tails are the bit that you fit the hose to, might be a pipe or the carbs, fuel pump, filter.

Hose clips are sized by the outside diameter of the hose, 5.5mm hose probably has an OD of about 10mm. Clip size 8mm to 12mm.

Those nice people at VW Aircooled Works will sort you out with whatever you need.
