about to sort getting rocknroll bed cushions and others recovered but has anyone covered in vinyl or similar and if so what do you think about it compared to a material covering.
We've gone for vinyl because of the muddy dog (and I spill food a lot) and we use a single quilt as an under blanket beneath the sheet. It doesn't seem to get too hot during the summer nights but the cab seats can be bloody hot if you're in shorts and the bus has been parked in the sun for a while.
Well, yes and no. The fabric has lasted well and looks as good as new which was about two years ago. The stitching, however, leaves a lot to be desired. We had it done by a local upholsterer and I'd give his work a firm 4/10. It's one reason that I didn't recommend him on the thread where someone was looking for an upholsterer in this area. I'd have a look at the various material options which are availiable nowadays. The choice is a lot bigger than just Leather/fabric/vinyl and the more you pay per metre the better (and longer lasting) it should be.
Vinyl for us, we put a mattress cover on the vinyl cushions and sleep in a double sleeping bag, well that's what my wife and daughter do, my son and me are on a blow up mattress in the awning
We never considered vinyl for the cab seats or the beds. I remember being stuck to hot vinyl seats in 70s cars and didn't really want to repeat the experience, especially when sleeping. A nice cloth upholstery is so much more comfortable (exactly how many modern cars have vinyl seats?.......) and I have a 1001 upholstery cleaner squirty thing in the cupboard for when the kids spill stuff.
There are various examples of vinyl fabric on the market some excellent, some I wouldn't let my dog sleep on if I had one. The latest faux leather is as close to real leather as you can get with a lovely soft supple feel & the right texture also. I am recommending it to all my customers. There are also faux suade fabrics which dont wear quite as well but look good & have a nice surface for sleeping etc. For me vinyl every time though especially with young children & small furry animals (living in a pict (pink floyd ref.)). Cloth fabrics (unless designed for auto seating) tend not to keep their shape very well on the larger cushions which is why original westy cushions would have been buttoned.
Vinyl can be fun when it's hot I ended up with bad burns on the back of my legs when I jumped in to my old spitfire in shorts once We have cloth remove able covers
This is what we put on ours, it can get as hot as it wants no sticking to this, unless your pyjamas are made of Velcro
