Depends on your long term comment to the van I guess Sam. I think I'd be throwing like for like back in. Get a cheap core for exchange and deep breath and spend a couple of grand with the Engine Shop, Elite in Basildon..whoever but just to get a low cost straight shoe in that doesn't involve any rare tin hunts, gearbox changes, chassis fabs etc etc. Enjoy the summer, maybe at a more leisurely pace..we didn't really take our 1600 over 50 and whilst that means longer journey times and some creative route planning we always got there. Then maybe start the hunt for a type 4 if you've a long term travel and mileage commitment to the bus, or even a built T1, Scooby etc doesn't matter. Collect the bits, refurb them on the side, sort a stronger gearbox to handle the higher speeds and any extra power you build in and go from there. But in the meantime, enjoy the van..
Obviously the next stage is to strip it down and amuse us with pictures of the mangled parts. Seriously though, probably not if you want to use it for a core exchange...
I should be getting paid for being an influencer I reckon, but I would pay a little more and get a 1600 from the VW Engine Company, rather than the cheaper options… but it’s your money
Have to say our 1600 always resisted anything more than 50 and that was a lovely Rob Parry rebuild. If we’d kept the Bay we’d almost certainly have gone for a bigger engine with a bit more grunt, not so we could drive much faster, just so we had a bit of grunt in reserve for those big hills, never much fun with the 1600.
Its down to you really. If you want it back on the road like yesterday then buy a 2nd hand turn key motor, fit it and drive. Might last 5 minutes.. might last a lifetime, who knows. When my bus was my only vehicle anything i did to it meant it needed to be on the road tomorrow so i do understand. Ive chucked a few unknown engines in in the past with a quick service etc. If youve got time the look at what you might swap it for but its not happening any time soon is it!
this is probably where I would be with it! i hated my bus being off the road for any reason. Still do!
You'd be surprised, it still has useable parts e.g. heads and er... even the strainer plate has value.
something like this would get you back but no idea on how much it will end up being https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/18539064...64579&customid=SI_vw+1600+engine&toolid=10049
I think the days when you could by a gamble engine for peanuts are long gone. Nowadays you're risking £1k upwards, not the £50-150 when we were young(ish) 'uns.
Hmm refurbished seems to be tarted up with new B&Ps / heads, no mention of any internal parts or bearings. this could easily end up knocking it's tired bottom end out with it's new top end power. I'd be wary + the OP doesn't need all the add ons?
They would! Particularly in view of things like cranks being very difficult if not impossible to source at the mo. Everything has some value, you can't have too many engine parts - rockers, push rods, heads, flywheel, cam / followers, oil pump and pick up tube - it all adds up.
whats peoples thoughts on a 6rib box i have my eyes on a 1776 long block fitting a full flow filter and cooling radiator plate with scoop Sent from my ELE-L09 using Tapatalk
