How much did you pay for your bus?

  1. I wished I’d kept the advert for mine. I knew what I was getting into for the money but the comment ‘a couple of weekends work to get an MOT’ still makes me chuckle!

    Embarrassing too much

After looking at too many badly described vans We went to look at a T25 but it was missing to much stuff but we then saw a bay in the same barn with nice new paint and so called loads of work done.

9 years later and still finding the bodges most of the chassis was held together with nice looking welds made up of painted silicon sealant and holes filled with crisp wrappers

Bought my South African crew cab blind on eBay from a specialist import company in the north east in July 2017.

I relied on the listing, photographs and 2 phone calls.

With the benefit of hindsight I’d still have bought it even though the description was less than accurate when it was delivered. How many RHD crew cabs do you see ?

I paid £4995 and have probably sunk another £2000 into it.

It’s currently worth £0 as I’m still battling DVLA to issue me a V5.

Anyone want a nice piece of yard art ?

  6. A friend of mine bought on a auction site (8 years ago) without looking at it first thinking it was a good one (wife liked the colour) then spent £32.000 on restore and sold it last year for £12.000. It was a late bay hi-top and converted to a pop top on resto.

  7. A friend of mine spent £12K on a Viking. He then had to replace the entire roof as it was so rotten. He also junked the whole of the interior and its now a tin top with just a bed in it...

I have it printed off somewhere but I recall it said “2 litre - this bus will do 80mph all day long”...
It probably will but not for many days!
Luckily I don’t think he did that very often as it’s still going strong 15 years later*. And it’s a 1.7.

*it’ll probably blow up next time I drive it.

  10. Yep - 1972 first house cost £4500 - new T2 Westy around £2k
My Westy cost me £10k in 2014 - found lots of rust in chassis that had been hidden .

  11. £12k for a 2003 Danbury Brazilian 1.6 aircooled in 2016.

Spent most of that time battling minor running issues with no luck. Now trying to source a fuel pump for it, none available in the UK so doing my best through google translate to source one from Brazil.
Out of stock price in the UK was £240, price in Brazil £39. But they don't like shipping across the world.

It's currently being used to store a dining table and four chairs. The table and chairs are available for £12k and I will throw the van in for free.

  12. Indeed and burning those £10 notes has become £20 notes these days
    Due to there popularity
New Part dealers and vw specialists popping up everywhere
Nearly as good at losing money as these things :)

    Can’t Danbury get you one?

  14. Do you need to use a an original fuel pump - can't you just blank off the old one and fit an electric?

Bit of a sore point at the mo. Bought my RHD South African bus for 7700 and have spent about 6k on it including new engine, gearbox and just about everything else that can be unbolted! At least it's pretty solid underneath.

My first panel van I bought in the early 80s was called fifty quid Sid - those were the days :D

Another £30k at least spent since.
    Still rusty.

    68000 happy miles since.
