  1. That's quite an epic journey
Why the urgency , take your time

  3. i did London to Reus (midway between Barcelona and Valencia) - 1000 miles door to door in just over a day - left at 0430 to get the 0600 ferry dover to calais - then onto Paris and down to Montpellier arriving at 1000pm - stayed in a F1 hotel. Left the following morning at 0730 drove over Pyrenees and arrived in Reus at 1300. averaged about 70mph on main roads but we had a rota of three drivers each two hours. Aside from the Paris ring road, really easy drive.

We did Naples in 4 days in our bay in 84. The trouble we had was getting away from Lou's family when we stopped to visit en route. We defo could have done it in 3 if we had just pulled up and camped as apposed to staying each night with relatives. It the took us two more days to get to the bottom of Italy - which I think is a similar distanc to your journey.

  5. Thanks a lot for some very helpful comments. We will be taking the route suggested by @theBusmonkey and I will take photos and send updates. Good to hear your thoughts on timings because we really need to be there on the following Saturday morning so have about 6 days to get there. Then one week with the kids in Malaga and then another 6 days to get back. Just putting new oil in the engine and gearbox now. Already greased the beam, so fingers crossed.

It's a breeze then. With 6 days you could do the eastern coastal route (or even detour through Portugal & drive along the west & north coasts...maybe one way down the other way up?
Make sure you stop in Seville if you haven't done so before.
We stayed here & got the bus in which stops just over the dual carriageway IIRC.:D

  7. @Sick Boy good luck with the trip. I really look forward to hearing how it goes, as we have some friends a bit further South and i'm tempted.

Take a spare clutch cable, just in case.

If I make it all the way round it should be about 3500 to 4000.

  9. Thanks - I have got a spare clutch cable. (A few days ago I posted a question asking what spares I should carry now I have a Subaru and that was one of the suggestions I got.) Incredibly useful forum this...

  10. I went from Santander (ferry) to torre del mar , nr Malaga in a 10l Daimler Benz double decker bus that we all bought together once, for a free festival thing. It took two days from the port arriving late the next day. Straight down. It took a little bit longer as the crusties in charge had to keep stopping to siphon diesel. I still don't know what that means, maybe filtering the tank?

Ive driven down from the channel to landes you can do it in 22crap hours , but it's two days really. Crossing at Royan is nice. Using the N roads in France saves your engine, and tolls and you don't get beeped.

I reckon minimum 4 days for a pleasant experience.

We've done quickest in a T5 2 nights from calais to our house in Los gallardos. It's 3 hrs from there to Malaga. We used to do los gallardos to calais in about 5 days. That was mainly cos my back seizes after couple hours journey, and we decided to make it a bit of a journey/holiday rather than tanking it. That was in a T4 and a Nissan terrano complete with trailer full of olive logs.

We did it in a T2 also but used A roads as well as mway. That time we got the ferry from st malo.

I personally would try avoid mway past Madrid and through the centre in the height of summer as it's flipping scorchio and goes on for ever! :)

I'm a muppet @Sick Boy just realised when you're going! Not height of summer :)

If you're looking for a place to stop South of Madrid then Aranjuez is nice and has a camp site nr the river. Shouldn't be too many mozxies yet :)

We froze in the T2 driving up past Madrid one yr. it had been shorts and t shirt in Los gallardos! We ended up driving with towels and rugs all over us as no heating. We stayed in a hostel somewhere the first night as we were too cold to kip in the van. The local Guardia turned up about a second after we pulled up but we said good evening politely and that was all :)

Stopped in a camp site over San Sebastion the second night. San Sebastián v nice. :)

  16. Most places in the south you can reach in nine hours. Head for Biarritz if you have an all the Aires book great stop over right on the beach. I'm just getting ready to leave the Costa blanca tomorrow but only going as far as Barcelona for the Grand Prix will be leaving there Monday then just ambling up to Calais for ferry the following Monday. Have a great journey weather here at the moment is changeable but very pleasant day time temps hitting 23 degrees night15. If your going to be around that time and I can be any help my mob is 00 44 751 404 9768. Mike. Have a good one!!!

  17. One other thing I forgot to mention when you get into Spain don't let your fuel get lower than a quarter full as was said before the roads are good and quiet, but you can get twitchy bum moments looking for fuel stations and watch your speed as there is a big purge on over here on speeding with road side radar and helicopters

We were working for a Guardia once and my colleague saw his uniform hanging up and wanted to try it on so I could take a photo of him :) I persuaded him it may not be the best plan if the fella came home and found him wearing it!!

  20. I am in Malaga now - just arrived in a 1960 MGA after driving down from Santander with a diversion to Gijon first ( friends daughter's place) - then down via Salamanca and Seville which we did in 3 days. We Travelled at a max of 60 mph averaging 28 mpg.
I have also doneCalias to Perpignan which took us 3 days in a Marina back in the 80s so a week would see you here a steady pace.
