How hot it too hot

  1. Now your talking my language! Thanks Snotty! Clearly getting close to the end of the resto I need things to worry over! As long as I can hold the dip stick even if hot I won't worry ...............

I might just get the jam thermometer and check it though!!!!!

  2. If you're keen, fit a VDO oil temp gauge and dipstick sender - should give you some idea of what's going on. Or it'll make you endlessly worry. Maybe ignorance is bliss. These engines bang all over the place temp-wise, it's how they are.

  3. Go for a decent drive then pull over turn off the engine and stick the jam thermometer in
It will be interesting to see what it reads

  4. To be honest I am happy that it isn't critical! I have no reason to think any thing is wrong, she runs sweet as a nut so now I know as long as I can hold dipstick then all is within parameters I am happy :)
I have enough to look at while reading the late bay when I am driving along without gauges to look at as well!! ;)

The running temperature will surely rise as the ambient air temperature does?
It's been pretty warm the last week or so....

  7. Yeah I agree, it wasn't so much that my engine was running warmer it was if it was now running too warm! :)

  8. Yeah but you have soft, thin, lady skin. :)

  9. Naughty ;)

  10. I have vdo gauge and this week its showing hotter,im not sure of its accuracy but it has gone to 120c a few years back but never over 100c since , as outside ambient temp is pretty warm at the mo , this cant be helping , i was starting to think id messed timing /valve gaps but ive checked them ,i then wondered if it was air leaks or lean mixture ,the list goes on really , ive fitted new exhaust too n wondered about stuff not being tight , the trub is so much stuff can alter things n you start doubting yourself etc, i have read if you put j tubes on you should really have a deflector tin when you use these?? someone will say ? , i wondered why you had lagged your j pipes but assume someone had said this helps head temps because of heat coming off the tubes?? The engine boys will know ? Sometimes we worry when we dont need to n others when we dont bang!!!

  11. Type 4 engines (i don't know about 1600's) you need to reinstate the under tins somehow. These keep the cool air flowing properly, so I've heard.

  12. physio has a 1600 type 1 init ?

  13. Maybe? Do they have under tins? Or is it left open for the blade that cuts the grass? ;)

  16. If I'm on a long drive then I can't hold my dipstick.

This is mainly because the dipstick is about fifteen feet from where I'm sitting.

  17. Nice one Barney! I have deflectors in place! I feel much happier now as I know that a 5 degree increase in temp from warm to hot is acceptable on the dipstick now thanks to the guys on here! Especially as ambient has increased by at least 5 degrees!
The real reason for my concern is that I have booked my maiden camping trip for July 11th from Northampton to North Devon and back and my Ar£&e is twitching! :)
