Has anyone fitted a remote servo to a 72-74 bay?

  1. OK, as you asked so nicely!

  2. What bore is your vac hose?

  3. The vac hose is 8mm ID. The take off on the servo is that. I called them before ordering the hose. It is very thick walled stuff. I had to order a reducing T to tap into the 12mm ID balance pipe.

  4. The guy on the phone told me the take off for the vac is for 8mm ID hose. Just measured it. the take off is 10mm. JOY!!!! That will need to go back. Unless it will stretch over.

  5. You mean the servo connection? 8 - 10mm is a bit of a stretch...

  6. Agreed. I am sending the hose and the one way valve back. The mad thing is that I called them to check before ordering the hose and the guy told me to order 8mm. I had 10mm on my list and changed it following his advice. It will be interesting calling them today as their returns policy says they will not return cut lengths. That is why I called. Everything else looks great though. I am going to get the servo mounted this weekend and then get the pipes connected when I can get the time.

Under the cab floor looks best for the servo location. I am going to use dome headed set screws so that it does not cause an issue with the carpet and mats in the cab area. It may mount under the seat area.

  7. Car builder solutions. lovely people! They apologised for their mistake. Replacement stuff already in the post. Great customer service. What makes a great business is how you react when something goes wrong. They don't want the other stuff back, as it would cost me money to send it.

  8. Does the thing fit under the centre walkway (cables in the way)? Or on the side chassis rails? Too lazy to go out in the cold and look ;)...

  9. Not got out there yet. Its freezin'. I am hoping it will go under the centre walkway but will need to have a good luck. Tonight's progress was to make a card template for drilling the bracket holes. Should have it bolted in place on Saturday. Then to make up the brake pipes. I am hoping there is enough room to fit it beside the cables but we shall see.

  10. It should fit roughly in the area where the factory fitted servo goes I think.

  11. Updates... so, the servo fits perfectly under the walkway and the drivers seat. Just 4 6mm holes to drill for the bracket. As the bracket runs either side of one of the floor mouldings, you will also need to make 2 3mm spacers to allow for the depth of the floor moulding. This will make sure that you do not stress the bracket when tightening up the 4 M6 bolts.

Use nyloc nuts on these as you will not be able to get to them easily after the servo is fitted.

  12. There is plenty of room for the servo to miss all the cables. Once tightened it does not catch the handbrake cables. The heater hose does get in the way but there is enough room, just to re route it around the servo.

I have had enough time under the van for today. Next step, making brake pipes. Just 4 to make.

  13. Excellent stuff. Keep us posted on progress. I confess I took the plunge and ordered one. You're our fitting guinea pig ;)...

Are the top pipe unions/ bleed screws going to be hard to reach with the servo mounted?

  14. There is enough room there, JUST. Should be fine. There is plenty of room for the bleed screws. The pipes will need quite tight bends so you will definitely need a pipe bending tool.

  15. I'm now fully equipped with flaring apparatus and a bender. SAE or DIN - the world's my oyster.

Installation will have to wait until after the MOT...

  16. That is exactly what I did.

  17. No point in making problems for yourself ;)

Surprising how good the stock brakes are, even un-servoed. When my bloke stomps on them, the brake-o-meter shoots right up. "As good as a modern car", in his words.

  18. Does the servo have to be covered from the elements? Or, is it OK for it to be exposed under the van?

Thinking about whether I need to protect the air control valve area of the servo.

In a conventional installation it would typically be in the engine bay. I’d protect it from the elements although it’s probably not essential.

  20. I think I will create some sort of shield from water and road dirt etc.
