We used that evergreen stuff, you know from the annoying tv ad with the frog. It works well but you cant compost your grass clippings for about the first two or three cuts. If I were you, just get some of the traveller folk in to tarmac it for you :)

  3. A nice lawn requires hard work. Its going to involve removing the weeds by hand, scarifying and aeration. the latter best done by a hollow tine machine if your lawn is big enough ... even if you re-turf then you will still need to get into a cycle of doing the maintenance to keep it like that and of course if you can keep people/dogs off then that helps prevent compaction.

That Green Thumb chap does he just use chemicals or does he do the hard graft bits as well?

  6. That plastic astro turf seems popular these days, a lot of it on new builds around where I am. I think folks have busy lives and don't have the spare time to look after a real lawn.

I play bowls in the summer and one club we play has a plastic green which is easy to maintain and rolls quite well if a little fast. Playing there next Sunday.

I used to have back garden mostly lawn but 5 years ago when I gave up my allotment, I dug up the whole back garden and turned it into food production. My neighbours opposite plant veg in their front garden, why not?

  7. Those machines do work but can leave a bare lawn afterwards which would need seeding.

I've done that once , can't afford to do it again, and it didn't take long for the weeks to take hold again, reckon a grass treatment specialist may be called for :)

  11. More the case of uneven-ness on our lawn. It's like an obstacle course.

  12. We have been in our house 12 months now and the new turf the developers laid is deteriorating.

Can you spot the new section laid a month ago by the developer due to a section of garden sinking!

I have been informed the ground here is mostly clay & this is what effects the turf growing followed by advise that I need to fork the lawn with a garden fork and sprinkle sharpe sand on it but I don't have a clue?

  18. Developers don't want to waste money on a decent garden or nice lawn, they just chuck a bit of soil down over the waste rubble and building junk and put a bit of cheap turf down.

They get their money and walk away.
