  1. Yep... you’ve forgot to fit some wheel centres on your empis... I’ve got a tip for those ! @Purple

Have you discovered what the problem was? Hope not too costly. Gutting that it happened on the way there, at least if it was coming home you’d have camped in it and had a cheaper trip back!

  4. :(:(:(
Not yet no, we’re back this weekend so will be having a look on Sunday. Hoping nothing too bad, I don’t even want to think about how much I’ve already spent on it in the last year :(

I did listen to the video but there's often a lot of exhaust noise on these things as there is on yours.

For future ref and anyone reading. The other side of the RAC chap would have been better. Better still where the RAC chap is. Even better right in the engine bay opening, never mind the picture - you're doing a sound recording, your phone is the microphone - pan from one side to the other even.*

    * I realise this isn't all always practical and you have other things on your mind!

  6. Yeah, I wasnt prepared. Was lucky to get my phone out and find the camera app that fast o_O Slightly nervous to restart it again when I’m back as don’t want to do any more damage. But I’ll try and get a better vid when I’m back

It could be as simple as the rear breast plate , the metal piece between the engine block and the pulley there banging against the rear pulley as it works loose.. They do come undone, also move a bit with the heat and start rubbing, tighten the screws and push it forwards with a screwdriver.

However it does look like tinware is missing , should not be able to see the ground just beside the pulley, so a very hot engine and resultant damage may be on the cards.

  8. Yeah, it looked like a screw had gone missing so the plate’s managed to wedge itself. I just dread to think what damage it’s caused.

Tinware wise some was salvaged from my old engine and the knackered stuff I replaced from JK so I’ll be annoyed if there’s still stuff missing!

  9. Don't beat yourself up about it, there's no rules to say you have to be engineering savvy when having work done, you are entitled to assume it will be done well.

Lots of good advice on here, but the technical/engineering purists sometimes forget that not everyone has the time, inclination or ability to spend their lives scrambling around a bus with permanently oily hands.

  12. I wish I did have the time. It might make things a bit cheaper at least! Got a load of books and thought best of both worlds would be to have a play about with the old engine and learn by having a go, while still having use of the bus. Did expect the new engine would last me more than 100 miles tho

If you keep on with it, what you find is difficult and time consuming the first time becomes more and more easy the more times you work on the bus.

If you have a deep pocket , and a good relationship with a good aircooled garage , you dont need to get hands dirty but for most of us, its so much cheaper and quicker to DIY, and after a while you can trust the person working on your bus ...

At first theres a cupboard of spaghetti with no reason, and you find yourself stuck with your nose in the manuals or on YouTube.

Later on you can remember what all the bits do, and where they go and can put it all together correctly, and the time it takes drops to something closer to the professionals time.

The video you posted - nice deep exhaust note I thought.

I don't know what the clanking is, but I knocked up "Exhaust Dub" to cheer you up, using chunks of exhaust revving/clanking as bass/percussion with some drums, some suitable vocal samples and a crummy Saxophone thing. It didn't take long. YouTube stamped on the bass (your exhaust) but it might sound ok if you play it loud enough, most things do. :)

Because I'm oh so helpful (and at a loose end), I imported the audio into my DAW and filtered out the low frequencies so I could hear the the clatter. That worked great though I was none the wiser. But I couldn't help noticing how nice the bass tone was as I cut it out.

To make that easy I had it going round in a loop, it's quite short and while I was listening I thought - if I cut a bit out there it would almost be in time, so I did. But it wasn't quite right so I chopped it up a bit more and moved and the out of time bits. Finally rearranged/copied the chopped up bits about to make a Sly and Robbie stle (I thought) bass line. I even added harmonics to the bass so you could hear it better on small speakers. The vocals are an internet star cook geeza, royalty free - he put out a pack of his best bits for just this purpose. Funny old world. :)
