  7. I just replied on the other thread

This group buy has closed as the company has nearly finished producing the extinguishers & is getting ready to ship.

I will be starting a list for a new group buy once this one has been successful

    Sorry!

    "Have it fitted"??

It'll take you about 10 minutes to do it yourself!

  13. how easy is it to fit and would it put out a fire if one started are they that good , as i have hade a mild engine fire and am thinking of fitting one once the bus is back on the round

  14. From what I understand they are very easy to fit

There are some threads on here showing installation pictures if you search firetec (may even be on this thread!)

In terms of working - the hose that snakes above your engine bay is designed so that if your engine reaches a certain temperature it will activate the extinguisher.

We've just had a fire as well so will be installing this as soon as it arrives + getting a large extinguisher and replacing the small one that saved our engine on Sunday.

  16. so does the hose melt then when they unit is activated

Yep, the trace hose melts above the point if ignition and sprays the extinguishing medium direct at the seat if the fire.

  18. sounds simple lol what does it cost to replace the unit or can it be refill and hose replaced

  19. I'd expect you'd need to buy a new extinguisher, but you'll also need to repair the van.. So your insurance should cover it..

As it has helped to prevent a total lose!

  20. Firetec arrived this morning!!

    huurraahh!

    - until I'd read the instructions and spoke to Tim at Firetec. :(

I had originally put myself down on the group buy after looking at all the pics posted on here (thanks Guys) and went for a HORIZONTAL mounting on the spare wheel - so that the gauge would be showing to the rear and I could see it when I had the engine lid open.

In all the pics posted on here the gauges were showing and the heat sensitive pipe exited to the right of the gauge winding over the engine bay. (just what the doctor ordered)
Here's where my problems start for a horizontal mount.

upon reading the instructions and unpacking you are instructed to mount as indicated by the writing and black dot on the side of the cylinder, in my case it says 'mount upright or this side down - with a black dot close to the bottom of the unit (opposite end to the gauge).

I thought they had sent me a non horizontal model so gave Tim a ring to check with my serial number but he talked me through and explained that it could be mounted horizontally or vertically - as long as the black dot on the side of the cylinder was facing down (ie closest to the ground side down)

    here lies the problem...
To mount your firetec horizontally with the gauge visible - the black dot must face down- and if you mount it like this to your spare wheel well you are going to have a problem if your horizontal unit is the same as mine because the heat sensitive pipe exits out of the wrong side of the gauge - away from your engine and under your spare wheel!!

After speaking to Tim and explaining this he said I would have to mount it the other way around (gauge towards firewall) and maybe install a cheap mirror on the firewall to read the gauge(??) or mount it upright.

was hoping to hear from any of the guys who bought horizontals to see how their pipes exit on the instructions (oh-er) or hear from anyone who's installed already as to where their "dots" are???

I know the dot represents the pick-up point for the foam and has to be mounted correctly - Tim also added that he had never seen any installation pics of the Firetecs in VWs!!

Maybe its something we've all overlooked and not realised that we need to specify a left or right exit on a horizontal install? - hope this makes sense to everyone!!

might be worth checking for the next lot of group buyers who want Horizontal??
