Engine woes for new owner - haven't even received my V5 yet :(

  1. Warranty is warranty... what you do need to mind is that you stick to the letter of it for the duration... so that might mean paying a garage to install it and write you an installation report with logged mileage etc

  2. Dude i am the hulkmiester i can do 80-90 mph no problems but yours man ca,nt and shoud,nt be doing that.period, i am so sorry for you. Sounds liek you got a bit of a duffer in soem ways but it can be sorted time is of the essence ,hey mine look slike Marmitee but drives liek a beast so persevere and think what engine you want in it. Peace man and love. You need to invest the time the previous owner did not.

  3. ive got a Vege recon in mine mate ,installed by p/o, between him and i ,there is 60,000 miles on clock and she purrs along sweet, thou must add ,since i got her ,ive been hellova specific re servicing/maintenance "what bus needs, bus gets" kinda thing ,sorry to here about your situation, darkest b4 dawn and all that ,best wishes

  4. I think for piece of mind I would rather pay a little bit more and get it reconned by a local recommended builder, who on the phone sounds like he knows his onions, and has told me to go elsewhere if I want a real cheap rebuild using crap parts :p

I think the next stage is to get my engine out, and get it stripped off and go from there.

Nigel Allan will warranty for 12,000 miles or 1 year, my mechanic mate can help me refit to ensure it goes in right unless there's a local Newquay air cooled nut that wants to lend a hand for some beer tokens?

It'll have as many re-used parts as is humanly possible. eg it may have dented old push-rod tubes, but then I expect your current engine did too. New bearings, whatever machining needed to case and crank, new rings etc. I've had 2 and one went back, but Mick from the workshop drove a replacement up in the back of his car without too much quibble. They're grufty, so don't expect please and thank you, but they are undeniably cheap. They'll even do the complete swap for £125 which is just stupidly cheap to remove, swap all the tin, exhaust, and everything then refit so you drive off.

dean_butler uses them for bits and bobs work and gets on ok. They always do everything he asks even though it seems they're not listening as he lists it, so he tells me. Budget engines is the game for them. TBH I expect a great deal of their business is people selling up after the engine blew up (last straw) and wanting cheap with a garauntee to sell the bus, but other posters will be along to say they've had their engines and no problems. After all there been problems with engines made by every company without exception. Some of the larger suppliers will do everything they can think of to wriggle out of the warrenty and at least Elite don't do that.

You pays your money and takes a chance.

But then again my mate got a vege recon 2L and I had to rebuild it for him because they'd dropped a bollock and failed to fit an o-ring on the oil pick-up properly so everytime he braked the oil light came on and he had to accelerate full on to get it to go out again. He let the 12 months elapse to save arguing with them... I did try and tell him he was going to wreck it...

  7. If I were you I'd take the hit £ wise, and get a decent recon from a reputable company with warranty. Keep your old old engine and get it rebuilt as and when funds allow. You have a spare engine then should the worst happen again.

  8. This is why I don't even bother quoting for type 1 builds... as it's a case of you can get a recon for £600, I couldn't do a build that cheap and have peace of mind about it!!

I'm a stickler of the old adage of do it once, and do it properly!!

Wasn't having a go steveagain, just sayin, you never know and big price is no garauntee of trouble free times ahead.

The quality of their machining is very good apparently. No direct experience for me.

Well I'm the same and if I find a couple of duff heads, I'm already over-priced so I just don't consider it. I do T4's for very close friends as a favour (and make them help) and that's it for me as far as major engine work goes.

Ive been waiting for someone to say drop a Porsche motor in, its only four bolts blah blah blah

  15. I've already had that mate, goes straight in :s

Also a scooby lump will fit with fettling.

I need to know if my engine is single or twin port.

I like the look of the gold or green engines from TES, as long as I match the engine and ensure my anceleries ie fan and tin wear match and are complete I should be ok?

  16. sorry to hear you have had such a rubbish start to bus ownership. It is worth persevering as they are brilliant fun to drive in a "nothing like a modern vehicle" sort of way and camping is 100 times better than in a tent. They are money pits though so you have to get used to that and do as many jobs as you feel comfortable with yourself. Zed and Paul on here are the oracles of Vee dub engines in my view and both appear to be recommending a recon so best of luck with that. I had issues with the engine in mine but its a type 4 so I got it rebuilt for sensible money.

anyway, do stick with it and you will soon see the better side of these lovely vehicles.

  17. the other thing you might want to do whilst the engine is out is get all the tin and the firewall blasted and powder coated. the engine bay will look fabulous when the new engine goes in.
