Some of my direct ancestors were smugglers, part of the Hawkhurst gang, but everyone in Kent was a smuggler back then...

  6. You hear bad and good about all of the recon suppliers this is doing my head in!
Vege seem to be a bit more than tes, but if I'm going for a vege then that's along the same money as getting mine rebuilt, locally, with the same warranty, and the chap lives 2 mikes away from me.

  7. Mine an elite rebuild and its alright so far. Had to set it up for them though but that's more to do with my ancillaries than the engine.

  8. Spend the extra money and go and see your local chap

Hes right when he says anything cheaper they re use old parts
Plus if it all goes tits up hes local so you can pop and see him easy enough

  9. Agreed Zed , a wee Scottish story if i may?" when i was a young fella ,and running all over the place ,doing "homers" ,helping out ,sticking my hooter in to anything involving mechanics /car related,my old man (father )mechanic from "old school" said "dont ever give an opinion on anyones potential vehicle purchase , cos , if it goes well ,you never get thanked ,if you say ,yeah ,buy it, and it "bombs ",your name, any reputation you thought you had, is trashed." being young /thinking he was an old fart i ignored his wise sage advice, and boy did that come back to bite me on the arse! (funnily enough ,never got on with my old man ,but anyhow practically every bit of advice he gave me ,turned out to be true)anyhow, when i posted my experiences re my engine(reconn) i thought ,"shouldn"t really be posting this ,if fella buys one and it bombs........"as i expect u know, he is in an "bad place " re his situation, even with a new engine, for me? it comes down to >will they honour the guarentee?<spelling!)if it goes tits up,?good work you pay good money for, but hells bells, as we all know, buy a camper ,kiss goodbye to your wedge! so, anyhow, i wasn"t having a sideswipe at your post ,i expect for every engine purchased (aftermarket) someone will have had a less than satisfactory experience,so "colouring" their opinion of same.i genuinely should have added that 2nd post to my 1st post, and ,if u will excuse my "stroking your knowldge " when i post re a tech.enq. ,there are several peeps on site i hope will weigh in with their opinion, you are one of them. my apology if i offended you, live long, and prosper!>>>>now, just out of idle curiosity ,is this the longest post ever onTLB?

  10. Your spot on steve

One of the things i learnt early on was not to do vehicle inspections or mot prep
It ends up a whole world of pain when the vehicles dont pass the mot or the new owners of the bus you just inspected phone you up having a go because they got a puncture on the way home

However beggers cant be choosers nowadays and most of my work will come because of the old fears

  11. Cheers for that mate , never say to a dude you just sold a fit vehicle to, let test , let test drive "if u have any hassle mate , give me a call ,i"ll help you out " do not ever do that !!!!! ever !!!!!!!!!! they/he will take the ******* ,big style ! (but i am my own worse enemy , i used to fix whatever the prob was, irrespective of why it happened/how long they had the vehicle/how they may have driven it, etc etc, just to get them out my life/face ,4 me ,it was the "path of least resistance " it simply was not worth the agro to argue with them, but as a lot of recent posts say "the old guys /new guys ? i like helping in the occasions i think i can ,but it can come back to haunt you/well, me anyhow,>>>>take care.

It's all good steveagain, I just posted some alt view. I agree wholeheartedly with your last post. Possibly the longest sentence if not the longest post. lol
I've also been there done that - in my case I end up fixing stuff cheap to keep everyone happy, but I avoid it now or slather with caveats making the inspection pointless. You're better off taking a good mate with you, at least you can laugh at your foolishness over a beer then. :D

  13. so ive had another scout around today with my feelers, ive been down to meet nigel allen, seems like a realy nice chap thats not looking at doing a cheap job, wouldnt entertain the idea. he has said if i strip out, remove ancellieries, he rebuild put back together, and refit looking at 1.5k to 2k :0 which is a bit over my budget, infact a lot over my budget.

the used engine i mentioned above, that has been pulled from a crew cab, is a twin port 1600 with new electric ignition, dizzy etc, is a complete running motor, new timing etc, bar an exhaust, he wants around £650 for, i would also want to remove the dynamo and replace with my current alternator.
Nigel said he will bench thest that for me at around £100-£120.

That option would put me at around the £750 mark, and should hopefully all well and good see me with a running servicable engine.

    what are your thoughts here?

  14. I guess at the end of the day it is down to cost. If he's gonna bench test the 2nd hand engine then at least you'll know it it's good or not. I guess your options are go with that or look at a recon for around the same price and have that fitted - either way seems about the same to me... Await the 'techs' replies though :)

  15. the reason i was leaning towards the second hand one is its complete, so all i need to swap over should be the alternator, then i can tidy it up before it goes in, and hopefully sell my current engine to someone as a project to rebuild.
that way i can claw some money back.
i am a bit dubious of a £600 recon engine, which i would also have to send my current engine off aswell.

I can feel your pain for you! Its not an easy decision to make!
We have a BN 1641 remtec motor sat in our 73, we bought it in 2009 to fit in our bus, which it is and it runs ok...we have not completed the resto yet (close ish) and the motor is out of warranty with Heritage. Ive got to consider what happens if this motor trashes itself soon after we use it..

  17. The decissions yours mate despite what advice people offer you something can always go wrong which might reflect unfairly on them

  18. so ive had a nice chat with laurie petitt this afternoon, he said he would love to rebuild for me but wouldnt be able to complete until eng of august !!

he said the only place he would send anyone to if he couldnt do it is to TES, he said they are always good rebuilds, good service and james knows his beans.
he also said dont touch the second hand unit, tested or not.
the gold engine looks good, the green is the same but with a 009 dizzy and timing set and seaed? i need to speak with TES to confirm all of this though.

You better hope it doesn't, according to a source I believe (and he should know) Remtec machine the cases to the last possibility because they can't be arsed to re-tool for a smaller cut. Next time it's pooped it really is because the case will be scrap... Make sure you put oil in it. ;)
They also reface the case halves and open out the pulley hole by 0.5mm so you have to keep the supplied over-size pulley or it'll ******* oil.

Or is it a new case engine?
