Electrical issues help needed

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by paul2590, Apr 15, 2018.

  1. After servicing the callipers etc , took the bus for a spin yesterday and noticed the INDICATORS not working. Pulled into petrol station and noticed an electrical burning smell and smoke coming out of the heater control slots. So quickly turned off the ignition.
Ok! Hazard lights are not working,
Indicator light stayed on when indicating LEFT but no light indicating RIGHT.
Today I cleaned and replaced all the fuses as the previous owner had random rated ones. Replaced the Relay, cleaned the original hazard light switch.
Sorted !!!!! Except the RIGHT Indicator doesn’t work at all or even light up ????
    Frustrated , Help Please !!!!!

Time to get out the multimeter and start working your way through it.

  3. What else did you do after servicing the calipers ;)? Anything wiring-related?

  4. If the fuses were random, could the right hand side wiring have burned through rather than the fuse, hence no action? Might explain the smell and smoke too! See if you can trace the wiring from the indicator stalk back to the indicator lamps and see if there are any breakages

  5. I wonder if the Hazard switch is partially fried, because that sits directly under the heating controls. Ironically it doesn’t smell burnt but the Relay did

  6. Would be best to have a good look around in case it's any wiring. Also sort your fuses out if they're not done already.

  7. Changed the hand brake handle that involved taking the rod out

  8. All fuses replaced and terminals cleaned.
Decided to remove the radio as it’s obsolete and all its wiring so I’ve eliminated that

  9. Summat not right somewhere, as a fuse should've caught whatever was shorted/overloaded.

  10. I’ve tidied the wiring on the passenger side , what a mess
Loads of dead wires probably from additional spots etc on the Roo bar when it was in OZ
    I’ll carry on tomorrow

The feed to the hazard switch is not fused
You need to have a look at the wires to see what has melted as something would of melted to make the smoke

    Turn that upside down.
It looks much happier that way up and will therefore be more helpful

Is it just the right indicator not working?

Is changing the bulb the elephant in the room?

  19. Relay will click faster if it is the bulb blown.

I did once have the handbrake lever set up so that every time I did a hill start and indicated left, it blew the indicator fuses.
Turned out the wiring loom rubbed on the lever and wore through the insulation. Pulling hard on the handbrake completed the short circuit.
