  1. Don't suppose you'd be willing to teach me too, would you? I'm looking at some welding needing doing on my bus that I don't think can be put off any further. :(

Mate, I only just get the gist of what I am doing. Next spring I might be able to show you a bit. I am really good at passing on the knowledge when I know if that's any good to you?

No mate. I really want to keep my welding progress to my own judgement atm. It doesn't help my confidence when people try to advise. Sometimes they mean well, but it comes across as criticism or ridicule. I know whats good and what isn't. I am more inclined to pm those who can help when I need help rather than put up pics for all and sundry to take the mick out of. I will do a full pictures update later.

I have an auto darkening mask. I got it today and am hoping it will help my vision as my old one was very blurred with weld splash etc

I am loving it now and really looking forward to getting neat and cleaning it all up.

Are your power setting high enough? I'm not an expert, but I don't think you are getting enough penetration - if you look how the weld spots are forming droplets - you might flap wheel of the weld and have not much left in the joint.

They are ok 're penetration. The pictures aren't showing it in it's best light Tbh. I have really hammered the welds and it holds well. I can go over the worse bits once I. have ground it back.

It's a massive learning curve for me. I really never thought I would get this welding lark. I am making good progress now and just need a bit more confidence. The welder is full on. Wire speed 4.

Mate - I'm self taught, admire anyone giving it a go.....

Maybe your wire speed is too high (unsure if 4 is relevant as it might mean different things on different machines).

All I can tell you is once I got penetration right, there was a lot less grinding/tidying.

Yep agreed. I am pretty good at showing my stuff in a bad light, but I can honestly say it is penetrating well. The mask hasn't helped me, I keep going over bits I have already done which creates blobs and poor looking welds. If you look at the jacking point repair it is pretty much how I am welding with good vision. I am not going to worry unduly as I am getting better contact now and I can go over what I am unhappy with later.

Some of that Looks good mate, from looking on my phone but im no expert.

once you grind those down a bit maybe it'll look much tidier.

Maybe @zed or @Paul Weeding can comment as you need to get it right.

Cheers Ray. I just have to keep going, the practice is how I am getting it mate learning from my mistakes as I go along. Paul and Steve have advised me so far, but there is a world of difference between being told and actually doing it. I am happy so far.

Turn it up - a lot. Sorry malc, but that's not good at all. Maybe not clean enough also but most certainly FAR too cool. I would be welding tose parts, which are a bit thicker than the outer skin at No.4 on mine. That's 110A blat blat blat. Minimum 80A if there was a thin bit (that's my next setting down).

Yours looks like the wire spends a lot of time bouncing off the work. Either because it's not striking an arc due to too lower setting for the mass of steel, or too high wire speed.

More heat, less wire...that's what it looks like to me, maybe getting too much gas. If your not 100% sure of your settings don't put welds where the grinder don't reach. Mock up some scrap in a similar position and practice on that. You won't get grinders on some of those welds. Vast improvements already though.

I would grind down your welds to about 1mm high, then turn up your machine a notch or 2 and fill the gaps. Sorted.
