I would remove strainer to check for metal contamination . Don't overtighten it, the aluminum boss in the case is weak. fill with new oil and start it up, If its loosing that much oil so fast there should be oil under the van, listen for noise and look for smoke out the tail pipe, If an oil ring has broke it will smoke, you WILL see it .
The only cost here at the moment is the oil, Halfords have good classic oil, Yeah I no Halfords

IF the engines cooked draining the oil won’t help, let’s find it what’s wrong with it first ,

Pull the 4 plug leads off one at a time , see if engine speed changes

    Me too
Ya still need oil in it to check which cylinder is down

  6. So I just drained because I topped it up this morning before I took that video. Just drained it this is the strainer. About 5 small bits of swarf.

I'm about to go buy some new oil and then I will try pulling the plugs out one at a time. I will post a video of for advice

  7. Not much to see in the strainer. Has the drained oil any contamination might be fine filings in it. It will have a metallic sheen to it.

  8. Felt around the bottom of the tray maybe about 5 tiny bit. Only a small patch with a metallic sheen to it.

    Time to reoil 2l?

  9. I am wondering whether it’s burnt the oil due to overheating/straining an engine down on power and whether the garage thought the hydraulic lifters were at fault when it’s actually a worn camshaft.

  10. If you haven't put it back yet be extremely careful doing up the strainer, I think it needs about 9ft/lbs of torque maximum which really isn't much.

  11. I think oil capacity is about 3 litres. And as above only nip the strainer bolt !!!

  12. Make sure you fill up to the max mark on the dipstick. Does your engine have an oil filter, I thought the 2l engines have a spin on one.

Does this engine have a working thermostat and flap system. the bubbling sound may be overheating oil due non circulation of cool air around the piston and head area.

  14. No thermostat and no idea if it has a flap

I can see the flaps cross bar rod in the above recording
I f no thermostat make sure the flaps are wired open or the engine will cook
You will hear tinkling noises when its real hot, that's the aluminium expanding , the bubbling is the oil

  16. Is it the bar between the coil and dizzy?

its horizontal ,and very close to the dizzy cap/there 's a flap at each end of the rod, if you have no flaps at each end of the rod then ok ,but if you do ,and they are in the closed position and you don't have a thermostat the engine will get hot and hotter

  18. Not much change in engine rpm when you disconnected the 3rd ht lead. I would say not much happening on that cylinder. Next step compression check. I do fear the worse if it’s been run hot & low on oil.

  19. Have you got the Bentley manual? Sounds like you could do with a read of it - if you don't try and understand the basics then you don't stand a chance of fixing it yourself.

  20. I dont have a Bentley I do have a Haynes. Thing is if you lot can point me, because even if I know it I wont know faults. But you guys have been amazing. I really appreciate all the advice.

The thing Is I dont think the fault came from the no oil and heat ( definitely didn't help matters) but this is an issue I have before then the new lifters fixed it for that short time
