  1. chances are, if it's a ball ache to fit, it's a ball ache to get out again...result:thumbsup:
We used to use a heat gun on some of the flight case insert trims we did...if it's the same type of plastic.... bit of an art, but if you watch it closely, it starts to look a bit greasy (just moments before it charrs).....you can bend it round your finger at that stage....
looks good when it's done nicely though

  2. Have you thought about taking 'nicks' out of the back of the trim to take the strain off the back of the t trim and let it bend easier. Then on any outside corners, you take some 'v's out to allow it close up on itself. Does this make sense ?

    I hadn't
I've still got some more to do so I'll try it:thumbsup::D

  4. It was a tip from the guy that I bought my new trim from and then when I was taking off the old trim I found 'v's on the trim around the spare wheel cover. Not tried it myself, mind. I'll let you go first :D

    No trim today.
Lots of rips to create the cabinet sides and dividers and more laminate rips. A bit boring showing pics of big woodworking machinery so I didn't bother.:)

In between cutting, I've had another dig at the Propex. It's now wired in and the combustion air inlet and exhaust are clipped into place.
I've drilled yet another hole in the floor. Only a tiny one this time although with no thanks to Propex it could easily have been a lot bigger.

The "external" units loom come pre-wired with multi-plugs, as do the internal units. However these multi-plugs require at least a 30mm hole in order to be able to run the loom to fro the outside to the inside. Now I'm not adverse to chopping holes where necessary but this seemed a bit excessive and also a bit restrictive.
So, I've chopped the loom in half, made a smaller hole, passed the cable through and will join the 7 loom wires together using a wirable multi-plug like this:
    857.jpg

Anyway, here are a couple of the trimmed cabinets now the glue has set:

    Propex wires into the bus:
    P1040621.jpg

Thermostat will mount where the old ashtray was, approximately (that's the offending multi-plug):
    P1040622.jpg

Oh, and the command wires (white & red) are only about 30cm long  are smaller than cheap speaker wire and are unprotected! See them here:
    P1040624.jpg

So they've been chopped short inside the rubber boot and I've soldered twin core insulated 2.5mm squared cable to the tails, heat shrunk protective sleeving on to the two joins and wrapped them up in insulating tape before feeding the twin core through the grommet to the fusebox position.
It's outside after all, isn't it Propex???
    P1040629.jpg

The air inlet pipe runs backwards and terminates just in front of the gearbox. VW provided a nice 6mm hole in the chassis to attach the "p" clip to

And the exhaust exits under the cill in a position not ideal but pre-determined by the set length of the hose. I will be fitting a CO alarm inside in any case but we will have to be mindful and sensible when running the heater. Agian, VW supplied the holes for the "p" clips so no more drilling:

  6. Regards the propex they definately should IP rate the electrics properly or you may as well just fit a standard propex. Its not good. Especially as its never going to be put in an easy place to access.

Good work and attention to detail - heat shrink - clucking bell whats up with insulating tape!! Lol cabinet front looks good!

Exactly @Dicky , I appreciate these kits are for multiple applications but it does seem under developed regardless of what vehicle it's being fitted on.

Hopefully anyone fitting one to a T2 will find the above worth considering. I just hope the bloody thing works after all this grovelling about and picking under-seal out of the corners of my eyes before the evening shower :)
Oh and I did use tape....over the heat shrink ;)

  8. looking business-like there BM....amazing how many holes there are for god knows what under a bus:D
Let us know how it works......

While the trim panel's off....could you do me a favour if you get a chance? Could you measure the top triangular hole in relation to the window frame, or other reference point? Or maybe a 'brass rubbing' template? I've half a mind to make a niche in the side panel, for storing small bits at night (whatever they might be).....I'd take my panel off to have a recce, but it means pulling the rock and roll out

    No probs chap.
I get laughed at for storing spare cables in the bottom triangle under the armrest next to the R&R bed so can totally relate to the need for tat trays :D

  10. I found a lot of the terminals inside the basic Compact were sealed with a dab of hot glue, so presumably, the bespoke underfloor unit should be pretty water tight....still, there's no shortage of marinized fittings they could've specified

  11. Tat! Tat! What are you trying to say? Gentleman's Dressing acoutrements, I'll have you know....Tat indeed!

Thanks @vanorak , me too! We're building the kitchen unit tomorrow after a bit more laminating first thing.
I just hope we've got the proportions right. The fitting of the Conty bed hinges has mean't the kitchen unit is shorter than the OG Berlin unit and the fridge box is longer, by about 3 inches, to compensate for the bed projection. The devil's in the detail......

  14. Tell me about it:rolleyes:.....and when it's all in and fitted it looks so straightforward....when i did mine, i just wanted a pared down basic unit with drawers, rather than cupboards....full width bed, so no other units, apart from an overhead...that took long enough!

If i was to do another (which i very much doubt), I think I'd batten the whole of the interior out, up to the cab doors, and use either bending birch, or matchboard....you could put double glazed units in, recessed roller blinds...great insulation etc. anyway, it's unlikely to happen, but apart from the fibreglass lined TV bus that was on here recently, I've yet to see a fully timber lined bus

LOL. The in-phrase in the workshop at the moment is..."it is what it is"!
This pragmatic approach to lining a small mobile tin box with ten pound notes is helping to cure the insomnia that set in a week or two ago!
    The MOT pass helped.
TE was the pressure date I'd set and we used to say at work that there's nothing like a deadline for focussing the mind. Now I don't need to worry about presenting to multi-million £ company boards, I can instead worry about whether to use shrink, insulating tape or both

  16. Interiors - pah! who needs em:rolleyes:. Its a bit bleedin minimalist in mine at the moment (and i like it!) However as @vanorak knows I like everything to hand and Im pretty organised when im camping to the extent I could find everything in my old interior in the dark and brew up blindfolded.

Ah minimalist! Our style seems to be that if we could take a spare sink, we would. In fact thinking about it we do have two washing up bowls....and the sink :eek:.
Indeed, I'm developing a justification for another crew-cab.
Chuck all the carp in the back, loads of room for all the camping accessories you could shake a stick at, and fit a removable roof tent expedition stylee.
    It's just that...........
