We went on the fish and chip run to Hunstanton last year, that must have been 150 vans, mostly T4/5's and quite frankly it was flipping boring.

The only scene when I got my first bay, was bumping into another bay owner on a beach or campsite and talking about them over a pint or cuppa for a hour or two. It was 1978.

  6. That would be my hell ,would rather walk round a classic car event ,steam show or anything else...

With the T25 there was lots of conversions ,colours etc (I am not promoting T25's) but with the t4/5 they are all basically a white van ,be nice to see a bit of variety...

But it's a camper and lets hope people make full use of it ,rather than hanging round carparks on a wet wednesday in April...:hattip:

Me neither, they arn't my photos they are all over bookface, I'm just saying that the Aircooled side has lost the mantle to the new younger it seems T4/T5 crowd who are now doing what a lot of the Aircooled side did back in the day when they we're of that age with there bays and splits, It seem now that having a Bay/split is just a thing people like to say they have got but don't really use that much, It does look like a carpark but back when aircooled was the norm that also looked liked a carpark to onlookers

It isn't the same at all.

The aircooled scene was initiated by ex bikers and the like, who knew how to fix them and muddled along helping each other out on a shoestring.I remember the swap scene being very vibrant and bugs were cobbled together with help from your mates. People sent you stuff in the post for next to no money and if you broke down there would always be someone along to help.

The modern scene is fuelled by money and from my limited experience seems a game of one upmanship with a well heeled 30 something crew trying to recreate something that the splitty/ bay beetle lads once had. It won't be the same or even close to the same because the camaraderie grew from a lack of money and a wealth of knowledge.

Unfortunately the bay split beetle scene is going the same way. Luckily we have this place and the vibe is hanging on.

The last VW show I went to had a stall selling expensive high heel shoes sums it up for me

  14. I like that but best to say so I reckon. Nail on head springs to mind. Ive had bays since it cost more to fixe simple things than the bugger was worth. (see my thread on bay sales) . its nice that it is worth spending (reasonably) on them that prices are ok. I reckon I could actually do all the work that needs doing to mine and still be on the good side should I sell it. That said I could not do the work and make more on it! staring

as for the scene!. I would love the scene to be what is described above today as it was in the past. we've kept some of that alive but I do find other don't get it and constantly want me to pay top dollar for Marmitee!

  16. I noticed over the last two weeks, touring devon and north cornwall a significant lack of bays around. I only spotted 5. I can only put this down to a certain class of people only using their bays in the warm weather.

I have no heating in the van driving along and at night heated the van via a 240v heater. I am sure most families, would be put off by this, and just stay at home until late may.

  17. I think this can be explained easily. As an example my mate just bought a 10 year old new shape beetle so that other VWs would wave at him and he'd be part of "the vw scene" (his words).

He goes to all the shows. He tells everyone he has a VW beetle. He's probably in Iceland carpark as I type this with other similar chaps, having an impromptu meet, comparing lowering kits and under body neon. At the weekend he'll be off, waving to any VW he sees, and looking for another cold wet carpark to stand in, because as is said above, it's the image people have of the old scene. His facebook feed is full of such stuff.

I'm not there with either the bay or the beetle, or at any other VW meet. I'm too busy trying to get mine to run.....

Back when I got my first beetle I used to go to such things, but mainly because without the internet, it was the easiest way to discuss rusty parts, give each other a hand and get help - that's what it was all about. I can do that now on here, whilst getting new or rusty parts from all round the world delivered direct to my house. Means we've all got time now to go and enjoy them at eth eweekends and use them!

To make a sweeping generalisation, if I may...
Old(er) people have bays. With age comes wisdom. ;)
I note the bays at the T4/5 drizzle meet are of the yoof variety.
    Nuff said.
    :D

  19. We used to convoy to raves meets etc as their was no sat nav or mobile phones
The activity was the reason for going and the convoy was the best bet of actually making it there
The vans bugs etc was a cheap way of doing it

Nowadays people seem to convoy and meet without a purpose once they arrive

  20. didn't Confucius have something to say about that...

better to travel in convoy than to arrive with bugger all to do. I guess he was bang on the money there chief!
