77 Westy and paradox like this.
  2. Make sure the inner surface of the wheel is not painted where it clamps to the hub, mine were powder coated.....much to thick, which squeezed out and caused loose wheels!
I removed the paint and put a film of copper slip on instead.

Seems a logical thing once its pointed out to you i will bear that in mind
the tyre place says i need to leave the wheels a week for the paint to harden before they will fit the tyers, i would have thought if the paint is being baked in an oven then there's not much hardening to do , everything seems to be delayed for one thing or another

  4. Top tip for putting the new bush in: thread a nut on the end of the long starter motor bolt. Put the bush over the end of the bolt next to the nut, and use it as a drift to knock the new bush in. Less chance of dropping it again.

PS Plenty of FEBI starter bushes on fleaBay.

Am I right in thinking these bushes are oilite bronze and should be soaked in oil overnight before fitting?
I know the one on the T3 is...

  6. Just squeeze a bit of oil in it before fitting.

Ah! So these things are already impregnated with oil for long term lubrication :D

Are you thinking of the starter bush or something from the toilet machines , something for the weekend sir

  11. I did the same and couldn't work out why new bush wouldn't go in and then realised I forgot to get the old one out!

Well i am glad to say the saga is over but not without one last hiccup, taking on board the above advise i put the bush on a bit of wire to dip into oil for a while , flaming thing sprang off the wire and through the air i know not where until after almost an hour of me the wife , daughter and dog looking for it
I took advice and used the d bolt as a tool to tap it in and it worked a treat - of course after i blocked up the hole that the first blighter fell through
i had a bit of a job with the accelerator cable as i failed to thread it through when putting engine back in but i got there
Wouldn't turn over at first but i tightened up all wires and it started strong as an Ox
The starter sounds like nothing Ive heard before but in a good way - strong and healthy , i will try post a video tomorrow some may disagree and say it sounds wrong ?
Thanks for the help / advise from all even 77westy who as a result i had to spend almost 50 quid for new fuel line stuff but well worth it in the end (when i get it ) i tried to price it up online separately but couldn't get it much cheaper to make it worth the time and effort , plus the website is an interesting read, promoting the issues of fuel line safety and worth a look if you haven't already . i will try make a bit of a feature about it and a how to kind of thing once it comes

Well this caps off the whole way things have gone with this job. Filmed this so you can hear the sound the starter makes which has been fine till I got the camera out . Recorded one start......then it refuses to turn over again. The wife is hiding all sharp implement and all rope from me .

  17. I don't think thats anything to do with starter motor.....

I think you need a hot start relay and to charge up your battery (in the case of my van, not just for hot start, but to get the most current to the important bits to turn over engine). Mine used to do exactly the same as yours and as soon as i fitted the relay all solved. Easy to do and only costs the price of a cheap relay and a bit of wire.

I know that I could change the wire from front to back but that seemed a lot of hassle!

    Hope you get it sorted.

  18. A relay should fix it. May also be that the battery's had it.

its a fully charged battery . maybe i need to clean and tighten everything , then look to a hot start relay anyway

Well i think/hope i may have found the issue, just been under to clean the wires, noted the 12 volt from battery bit loose onto its terminal , a little waggling and the cable separated from the connector. connected has aged pretty badly
Visit to Halfrauds in the morning and get a solder on one , hope that cures it.
