Just a thought but a faulty brake bias valve could lock the rear wheels on if it's totally gunged up after 40 years. Easy enough to strip and clean up.
It was the difference in bias that changing from small rear drum cylinders to big Porsche calipers that got me wondering about the abilities of a standard mc to cope. Others seem to think its ok though.
Morning update , went out to it this morning and it fired up 1st time, checked all the gears and there ok too ! Which is a relief so it must be a brake issue of some description as I managed to drive it in the garage no problem. Obviously the brake has released it self with being stood . I really havn't time to investigate further at the mo as I've neglected work and I've loads to do before I go away on hols,so it can wait Til September , when I can pick this up again thanks for all input etc from you guys. Time to start this thread back up now I’ve got time , been so busy of late .......we’ll it’s been 2 months since I parked up the crewie after breaking down in the centre of Lancaster . Went into the garage and jacked up the rear near side where I feel the problem is . Made sure it’s in neutral and removed the wheel , tried to free wheel the hub it goes round then stops sharply , you can force it by hand it finally gives then free wheels round and stops again ! This appears to be a gearbox issue and poss not a brake issue which I first thought any ideas guys I’m now out of my depth on this ? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Just to add I’ve done the same to the offside and the hub/shaft turns freely with no issue.. Everything visually looks ok . Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Still might be the little horseshoe clip that holds the handbrake lever in the brake drum has fallen off and welded itself to the drum. Then it can be forced past the pads in its own little groove then it hits the less worn pad. At higher speeds it would have just banged and then slipped under and repeated its orbit. Drove 2 miles with the clip orbiting noisily once. Decided I didnt want to break down on the A3 just where it fell apart.
Unfortunately Dunc I don’t have the correct fitting to undo those type of bolts , will get tomorrow . But to add, that hub will move freely backwards but not forwards Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Just a case of working your way in one step at a time, if the hub spins ok after you've disconnected the drive shaft then you can move on to the inner u/j checking that they're ok, then spin the drive flange on the box etc
Might get a couple of hours late tomorrow afternoon , so I’ll report back . Thanks guys Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Removed the coupling from hub and the problem is still at the hub ! So I’ll remove brake disc and check the bearing and hub , (back soon ) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Absolutely, I’m on with it now and it looks like it’s related to the handbrake the mechanism appears to be catching the hub. Wether this is the problem or this is a result of a more sinister problem remains to be found ! Any further thoughts or advice welcome guys . Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Any body any idea how this attach’s to the drums ? I’ve tried fitting the drum body in between the groves but it falls away or is there something missing ? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Take it off and use a brick! Not got fancy rear discs, so can't help, but does the other side hold the answer?
What discs are they? Porsche with an internal drum brake for the hand brake? Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
