Break down with a difference .

  1. Evening chaps, well I foolishly ran out of fuel yesterday coming back from Tatton Park, faulty fuel gauge doesn't help and I fortunately had spare fuel in cab. this then lead to crewcab not starting so had to call for assistance and had to be jump started all then good drove home.
Today bought and fitted new battery, started first time so thought I'd take my two boys out for a drive to their gran's, on entering Lancaster this afternoon I was approaching some lights possibly doing 10 mph and something gave way and locked up the rear , the engine was still running which I immediatley switched off.
I was stranded in the middle of the road and with help was unable to push it to safety, eventually was recovered :(. obviously this is not the usual fuel or electric problem, I maybe think gearbox ? Any thoughts as tomorrow I need to decide wether the bus is coming back to my garage or my local garage to be sorted.

Does sound box or diff related. @davidoft might have an idea.

Was you able to get the box into neutral?

Please confirm 'with help unable to to push it'

  3. NOT movable was on a downward incline and didn't need handbrake !

  4. Seemed to be in neutral when I left it. IMG_5979.JPG IMG_5975.JPG IMG_5978.JPG IMG_5984.JPG

I once had a gearbox on the way out. Occasionally it would jam up. Push car back and it would clearly move something (something was jamming in the teeth was my guess) allowing me to move forward again.

Check the drive shafts aren't loose, but sounds terminal, maybe the diff, bit were you changing gear ?

  7. I was in gear there was no noise, no warning just happened in the blink of an eye, I was fortunate I was going very slow at the time.

  8. I Think I'd rather have it brought back to mine tomorrow, so I can do an elimination process and try and solve myself ,rather than it being stuck at a garage for a long time trying to be sorted what do you guys think ?

1st job get under and undo the drive shafts, either end both sides then it'll roll!

  14. I can't help with what's wrong, but that is a proper breakdown. A police car and a proper sized recovery truck is good going.....

  15. Sorry to hear that Graham - does sound like the gearbox has locked - but could be something has let go in the rear brakes- good luck in your investigations

What's the handbrake set up on those then?
If there's a problem there it'd certainly be enough to lock it up!
Undoing drive shafts will tell you whether it's brake or gearbox issue!

Back in the day, the breakdowns vans would have stuck the hub caps under the wheels and towed it

  19. Sounds like brakes could have stuck on. Like @Flakey said, disconnect driveshafts and see what happens

  20. If the brakes and gearbox is locked how did you get it on the lowloader?

Did it skid along on locked Wheels, skated or just winched on as normal
