Don't do it!!! Find an Audi spacesaver like l did and have an armrest and spare inside.

However if you're going for the new swing out Danbury style, then why not. The drop down one is nothing more than a PITA!!!!!

l have a secret weapon. It's called a ramp!! raise it up, drop it down, problem solved. However l suppose with a T4 lump this carrier isn't such a problem. But whatever the engine l don't like them. l like what Paul is doing to Paradox bus/Danbury offer/Landmark type have. Neat, sweet and simple.

I was just gonna post up Paul W's design for Paradox, it looks very sturdy - maybe worth asking him for a cost on one?

  8. Saw a early westy in the garage yesterday with the spare on the rear section of the westy roof?

  9. I thought about fitting one of the rear wheel carriers once. Then an AA patrol said, they are a nightmare. You cant get to the engine bay when they break down.

  10. Yes you can I've broke down many a time.
    There on a hinge .

early westy has a bigger area on the roof (front hinge) later ones like mine aren't big enough, i already tried that option. Paul Weeding cost one up if you will, would prefer a swing out like the danbury one, does anyone know if they sell them?

Exactly. For the regular checks/top-ups it's absolutely no hassle whatsoever, and takes 5 seconds to drop down and doesn't stop you getting to anything.

For anything more involved or if you're trying to get inside your engine bay, 2 bolts and it's off and out of the way in no time. Most mechanics should be able to manage that ;)

  15. I found mine very usefull. It means the wheel isnt on the front, inside where I sleep or taking up room id rather be living in. As others have said above it doesnt impinge massively on access for service issues - particularly if your is a type 4 motor. Like the idea of the swing away rather than hinge down but they arent available and you will have to drill your body. Truth be known that wouldnt be an issue for me tbh.

I picked up a devon one for £1.99 last year on e-bay, no problem getting to the engine but that might be because i haven't fitted it yet:)
when i do fit it its fine for oil checks etc its fine and for anything more remove 4 r clips and the whole lot lifts off so not much hassle.

When you've got what is essentially a van, why do you want an ugly outside wheel carrier? Bung it in the back whilst travelling and under the van when camping. Simples.
Never understood people putting surf boards on the roof either!
