Do love an ebay bargain, well done! As you say, no hassle at all. Much better than having it inside...too bulky/grubby unless it's in the rear well, but that's no good if you use the RR..

Why is it no good if you use the bed?
Mine is in the rear well and a wheel cover, so perfectly clean and secure, and I just chuck it under the van when I'm camping. Looks better than a carrier and less likely to be knocked / nicked imho.

  5. I really like this idea.I was going to put the spare in the luton of the Jurgens. A space saver would be even more ideal. What model Audi space saver did you find/use ?

  6. More likely to be nicked under the van than bolted to my rear carrier with a locked cover on it. I assume you always sanitise the space under your van so you dont have to put a wet/dirty wheel back in the van each time you move! Each to their own mate and a perfectly good recommendation. Just not for me:)

No I don't sanitise under my van but then I don't have OCD....
I meant more likely to be nicked from a supermarket car park when its in the van, rather than from a campsite when its under the bus. People are more likely to nick my boards than a spare wheel. If they lock on to the carrier then clearly not a concern.

  8. Having it on the rear of the bus means ive got room for the dog and ferret boxes in the rear of the van
This allows me and 3 others the space in the main area to sit out of the inclimant weather and have a hot brew and meal

I dont want it in the van as i try and keep the inside clear so i can pull over for a brew or bacon sarny or just chill out at a nice view with out having to
unload the van same as arriving at the site pull up swivel seat pop top job done.

  11. OCD lol I jet your gist. Wheel also gets in the way of my luggage. Taking 3 women everywhere means luggage - no room for spare wheels!;)

I'd like mine out of the van - nothing worse than wrestling with a spare wheel at 2am in a befuddled state when all you want to do is lie down :(

  13. Just thinking it would be fab to have an external carrier that held the wheel as required and pop it inside usually as Baychap suggests. Bit like a slot on bike rack on the tow-bar or similar but one that meant you could still use the tow-ball. Guess that again is more knickable though.

Fair enough; each to their own I guess.
Personally, I'd rather spend the 30 seconds "wrestling" with the wheel than fit a frame to the outside of my bus.

  15. Youve probably got a nice bus then!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I like it!

When I had a westy with a full width bed, slept with feet that end and barely noticed the wheel was there. We had 2 kids and all the stuff that entails.

I used to hate seeing them on the front and wondered why, but then again didn't really pay attention and assumed everyone had full beds and had the wheel on the front because they thought it looked good.

Now I've cut the spare wheel well out and fitted a propex where it was and the spare (when I get one) goes on the front on the bracket that was on the bus when I got it.I used to hate this! Not keen now either TBH, but it doesn't really matter in the scheme of things.

Horses for courses? It's encouraging that we're not a bunch of sheep after all and apparently each have very different needs and solutions for a basic thing like the spare wheel storage.

But now Dicky's got me thinking. I have a clamp on the towbar bike rack I used to hang the camping chairs on to save room in the bus. I found the key yesterday after loosing it years ago. If I had a towbar I could adapt that and leave the front wheel free. One day maybe.
