Blue to tango resto

  1. Rubbed down the epoxy mastic underside of the van - getting it ready a final coat.
Also prepped the sill panels and floor supports for epoxy mastic.

Decided to use the new spray gun I bought instead of the brush - first time I have used a spray gun

    It was awesome :chewie:

Feeling buoyed I had a go on the underside of van - did the two front wheel arches and pedal area before running out of paint - deffo going to do the rest of the last coat with the gun!!

Had enough light and time for a last coat on the gearbox, then the heavens opened and I had to head off to pick the wife and kid up from a play date ;)

    Pictures tomorrow ....

  2. Oh yes turned out that it was the remains of ball on the end of the hockey stick.. Thanks @zed
I took another look at it today there are signs of wear on both the hockey stick and selector where the ball / hockey stick should have been...
The wear is not as bad as the pictures made it look (once I cleaned it up) I think I'll try a new ball on the stick and see how sloppy it is. I need to keep my eyes open for a new stick ....

  3. Today was a welding day....

    To this
    [IMG]

It was a bit of a mare - wire feed kept chewing up, welds were a lot poo.
This was pretty much the height of my welds
    [IMG]

I think I should have taken the sills back to bare metal where I was welding rather than relying on the weld thru zinc.. :(
Also I have decided my 100 turbo welder is sh1t3 ...

Need to grind some back and redo, any recommendation of die grinder bits?

  5. Going to get an air finger file thingie and undo my pigeon poo welds - it was just the floor supports to inner sill.
Perhaps it was the shower of molten metal I was giving my self but they didn't turn out right :D

Until that arrives something else todo - paint this under belly thanks @manyprojects

  6. Why don't you just completely weld over the pigeon poo? Aslong as its strong you won't see it, unless your not having belly pans.

I have the Clarke 90. No turbo.. And yes they're Marmite. Wish id got a bigger one now lol.
I managed it with 1 max setting, wire speed 5-6. Gas pressure of around 10-12. If that helps lol.

  8. I think that I might give that a go - a few others have said that too.

it's strong but ugly, I guess it's just not how I pictured it looking and I can't help wanting it to look right

  9. I'm the same mate, got the same bobbing on all my jacking points.. I'm getting bored of burning myself so might get whoever a painting it to finish them off lol.

Nice thorough work going one here. Neighbours by the time you finish the welding the council will have no case - crack on.

Nice cleaning and painting and good prep on the metal work - it should fall back in place once you crack on with the welding. well done so far dude:thumbsup:

  11. I hear what your saying Carl, I got some interesting burns - the wife has banned me from welding until I buy a fireproof boiler suit lol
Cheers poptop2 - we will see how the neighbours fare once I get cracking on the other bits of welding :D

  14. So the plan is to seal the fuel tank seeing as it's out at the mo, and give it a coat of paint (epoxy I think)

So I bought the por15 stuff from frosts and got cracking - there is also some instructions on ratwell which I followed...

When I took the spout and filter off the fuel tank the threads were shot on the nut...

    ^^ bought a replacement

Very carefully using a hacksaw blade tidy up the thread on the fuel tank ^^

Then I removed the sender and plugged the hole with a lid of Helmans mayo
    [IMG]

This is the stuff to clean the tank
    [IMG]

Starting with the brick cleaner which will prickle the metal, I put some in neat for an hour and rotated the tank. I drained that off into a container for later use elsewhere...

Now I have filled it to the brim and put a litre or so in to soak for the next couple of days
    [IMG]

I'll then hit the marine clean followed by metal prep and ready before tank sealer, which will probably mean the tank will be ready to clean sometime over the coming weekend... But my folks are visiting so....

  17. This is the link to the instruction I am following http://www.ratwell.com/technical/FuelTankRestoration.html

So I have acid washed the tank twice with a inch of water and a half a litre of the stuff.
I rotated the tank every fifteen or so minutes for an hour or so then tipping out.
Then I filled it to the brim and put about a litre in a left it for a good day and half.
Tipped the acid wash out yesterday it was a nice grey orange cloudy colour.
Gave it a good rinse until the water came out clean.
It looks more rusty now then it did at the start
Perhaps that's a good thing  maybe the rust was hiding under deposits of sludge and the paint and become porus. Either way the metal prep and ready stage will eat the rust and etch the metal for the final stage.
Yesterday I stuck in a litre of marine clean and lots of hot water until it was upto the brim again.
Then I gave it a good agitate ;) and rotated it every hour..
Later today I am going to tip that lot out and rinse and see how it looks...

If it looks clean I am going to move to the prep and ready stage, otherwise I might do another night of acid followed by another night of marine clean and see how it looks then lol

Can't get any pictures as the camera is rubbish and the light it poor...

My air finger belt sander arrived yesterday so might have a go and removing the pigeon poo welds..
Also started fitting new boots to the tie rod ends as they seem to have perished any tips of how to get the metal clips on - really tricky blighters they are ...

  18. Sooo today was prep'n'ready day for the tank ... Thing is it still looks rusty afterward :(

    That's the baffle
    [IMG]
That's the top of the inside of the tank
    [IMG]
That's the bottom inside of the tank - which looks ok. It probably had the most time with the brick acid...

I think that I am going to have to do the weak brick acid step again... It actually looks worse than when I started

    To-
    [IMG]

    I found a pin hole
    [IMG]

So despite good advice ;) I opted for the weld approach..

    Then dressed-

At the moment the hair dryer is being put to good use drying the tank interior
Once bone dry I will be plugging it up and pouring in the por-15 tank sealer...
