Blue to tango resto

  1. is he the bloke that owns the lockups behind the harley dealers? they're nice units but about 550 a month last time I looked into it. it's good if you find someone who'll let you piggy back for a bit of rent though

  2. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

I have to admit if one of my neighbours was grinding in the garden for years on end I'd be peed off. I would let them get on with it if it was just the one, but if they started another, there'd be trouble!

  3. It's the ones at marsh farm in Milford 100sqft about 150 a month - which now sounds cheap compared to the ones you mention :D however there isn't any space for a couple of months so..

Yep I agree but I've only been at it for a couple of months, I think they also probably just object to the whole idea :(

So I finished up the tidy ups - cut the repair pieces now just waiting for the correct conditions (no wind or rain)

    Here's the floor
    [IMG]

I think I may have made a boob drilling out the spot welds from above the holes are oversized.
I was thinking to use them to plug weld but there is a yawning gap still (when I test fitted the repair sections)

  4. When i lived in shropshire i got constant hassle if i worked on the bus regardless of time of day
The complaints soon dropped when i serviced peoples cars on the cheap and fixed there lawn mower, toaster etc

  5. Back from Cornwall - camping in the tent again - nice weather :D

Managed to put my back at just before we went, a week or so again :( but its starting to feel better agin :p

So on light garage duties ie. not lugging the welder round to the van or other heavy stuff

Decided to attack the brake servo (expensive things so worth tidying up)
    Before

After with a coat of kurust:

Also the front disk brake splash guards

  6. Brake servo mount ready for welding on to axle - tomorrow will finish up axle if my back (wife) lets me:

This interesting pipe for the brake servo goes in the front wheel arch - something to do with balancing out the vacuum in the servo with the outside air pressure from the brake rod side

I cleaned up a whole load of other stuff too but only managed to wire brush and kurust these .. Sorry for the boring nature of the update ;-)

  7. Time for the turn of the front axle I got off @madpad again
Attacked it with the fiendish wirebrushes to remove the rust that had grown over the weeks
A quick wash wish fe123 before epoxy mastic at some point...

  8. Tiny steps at the moment :(

Fitting the brake servo bracket to the beam - a test fit:

Used the datum measurements from when it was fitted to the old beam..

Looks ok - will weld it I place possibly today ...

  9. On your angle grinding issue, is an air powered grinder any quieter? I would have the same issue as you with neighbours. Ive been using a dremmel as its easier to use although i soon get through the small cutting disks.

  10. Yer might be little quieter if it wasn't for the compressor :p
I think I'll just have to do it as quickly as I can and be a considerate as I can - not that it will slow things down much more already slow as a snail :(

  11. A day of trials and tribulations, first off I had a blood test booked for midday which wiped the morning out

Then the welder started playing up I would get the axle all set up for welding and then it would do nothing. Then when I take it apart it would start working again

So them i cracked out the leccy tester and isolated the board and found this:

    A bit of solder later
    [IMG]

:chewie: all working again only 2hrs of plonking about :p

Then I rubbed some epoxy mastic until the batch mixed up I'd made up ran out
    [IMG]

Need to flip it over and do the other side ...

  12. Another couple of coats on the front beam
    [IMG]
And the steering knuckles got the epoxy mastic treatment ..

Also used a bit of black enamel on the brake servo and starter
    [IMG]

Front brake disc splash guards with VHT paint
    [IMG]

    Flaps and bits in VHT
    [IMG]

Running out of things to paint - will have to find some more bits.

Made a bit of break through with the epoxy mastic - it really needs thinning to get a good smooth finish :D

  15. Nothing much to report
Lick of paint for the gearbox hanger
Degunking the gearbox - loads of oil behind the throw out bearing and generally inside the bell housing. Got most of it out.
Degreased the firewall too, pretty oily where it sealed between the gearbox and engine.
Oh and made a splitty for the little un :D

  17. Thanks Para, that I did not know about the VHT
I am glad that I gave the outside (splash side) a coat of black glossy topcoat, wasn't sure if I was being a little OCD As no one would really see it

Not been up to much the last week or so nursing a cold / man flu and watching the rain fretting about the humidity.. I am guessing it's not a great time to do welding and painting when the air is damp :(

Started work on the disk callipers the other day. Took a lot of teasing (with a hammer on the side) and air to get the pistons out, one side was seized.

Tore them down but they are well and truly fubar heavily corroded in general, the pistons were chipped and pitted on the face and sides (not by me either for a change), the callipers were cracked and actually split where the bleed valves screw in
So the verdict is to buy a new set when funds allow
    [IMG]

All the stuff I painted got moved to the green house I am hoping that it is warmer in there than in the cold damp garage :D

Then I cracked on with the gearbox, spent ages with degunk and my steam cleaner then with marine clean - cleaning the 40yrs of muck off. There's was loads of oil dumped behind the thrust thingie.. All clean now tho...
The I attacked the crust of corrosion with my squad of wire brushes:

I did also drain the oil from it although the top drain hole still weeped oil out - annoyingly as I wire brushed. Looks like I will be degreasing again ;) the oil was smelly but not burnt and looked clear so I feel safe not going any further than the surface of the box. The last time I drove it the gears held well and it wasn't noisy, just the usual sloppy gear change.

The intention is to give it a coat of manifold grey paint por-15 to give its pitted surface some protection, take a look at the hockey stick end ball joint thingie (a cause of sloppy gear change), do the thrust bearing and jobs a good un!

Hopefully the weather is a little better next week and I will weld up the sills ...

  19. Had another trial fit of the outer sill and beams.. Pretty happy with it just need to put a little bit of epoxy mastic on the bits I won't be able to get to once its welded.

Finished off the wire brushing of the gearbox .. And decided to take a look at my hockey stick

Hmm I am sure there is supposed to be a ball - did I drop the ball

The end of the hockey stick looks odd - I am guessing that's not normal either :(

Oh well I order up another ball and see it they sell hockey sticks too ;)

Time for a lick of paint

    And after a little time
