I’m reasonably sure my silicone sculpturing skills are not good enough to replicate the beading and I wouldn’t be happy with a bath seal type appearance. Getting the glass out of the beading intact is harder than putting it back, the glass I broke was out of a new housing but fitting the old glass in the original stainless-steel housing with the new beading wasn’t difficult, just a bit nerve racking. As Haynes would say, assembly is the reverse of disassembly - but don’t break the glass.
I’ve just ordered a pair of these from Autowares taking off the bigger ugly Brazil ones that aren’t convex anyway.
The mirror people that @77 Westy recommend seem to be very good. They have just come back to me that they unfortunately can't match my LHD convex mirror glass to my existing mirrors. Not to be this time, but good service and honest all the same.
It may be that the viewing angles make the wide angle option unworkable. Looking at the RH wide angle mirror close up i.e. from the RHD driving position may give a very different view if you use the same mirror but are sitting in the LH seat?
The frames on each door can be adjusted in/out and up/down. The convex mirror just gives a wider view to a flat mirror, and fits either side. Standard shape. So, it's just personal choice. I'd suggest just buy one (JK or anywhere available) , blue-tac it on either side and see if you like it. If you like it, install with silicone and buy another. If not, send it back. I think it’s more likely the computer says it’s for the left side and it doesn’t know that on a Bay the mirror is the same both sides. How about these instead - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/33229290...and=Volkswagen&_trksid=p2563228.c101110.m1982 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/37220258...and=Volkswagen&_trksid=p2563228.c101110.m1982
I've asked them why and hopefully we can sort this out. The chap Paul who answered was very helpful. My mirrors look a similar shape, here is a picture of one of them.
Just going to keep em if I ever get round to getting some all terrains on a set of back rims for an alternative look
How very odd. I asked the mirror company why they could not help and I got back the exact same answer with no explanation...sorry we can't help etc etc etc. I think it is a case of computer says no! I'm going to take a punt and order one anyway and will report back.
Quality mayb not quite as good as originals but I’m happy before could only see the door mirror of the car on the drive, raining couldn’t be bothered taking out of the garage..
Whilst I'm waiting for the wide angle glass to arrive and experiment with, does anybody know how to remove the flat glass from the backing plate without the use of a hammer! If the replacement glass fits and gives the right angles of view, I'd like to replace the old mirror glass fully rather than just stick it to the old mirror. @72usWesty may I ask a favour and could you take a photo from a LHD drivers position (i.e. your passenger seat) to see what the view is like? Ta
Gently prise the glass out of the beading with a blunt instrument. A bicycle plastic tyre lever might be suitable, I used a thin, flat wooden lolly stick - and only broke one mirror, but that was 50%. Installation is easier.
Mirror prised off and survived, more so than plastic backing thing! So I have used silicon sealant and double sided tape provided to fix new offside Car Parts Market wide angle mirror. View from LHD seat is now great. Shame the company does not know it's own stock.
Thats the opposite of mine. The "distant" mirror is a smaller angular size than the "near" mirror so it benefits more from being convex and increasing the angle of view in the reflection. Its still pretty small. So I have flat offside and convex nearside on an RHD. It isnt confusing because neither shows as good a field of view as modern wide mirrors.
