Autowares convex mirror

  1. These popped up on my FB feed this morning, looks like a really good idea. Convex glass so you get a wider field of vision.

I'd love to get a set to try them out but being skint and looming redundancy means i can't justify dropping 90 quid when my WW stainless mirrors are perfectly fine. :)

I replaced the glass in my OG nearside mirror with a convex replacement off eBay after a cyclist managed to cycle far enough up the nearside that I pushed them off their bike.
That was when I started rolling slowly forward and in towards the kerb while they were cycling faster than my bus between the kerb and the nearside of a slow moving queue.
I did not see them coming but on the other hand, they got what they had coming too.
Just as well it wasnt a passenger suddenly opening a door on the nearside.

Looks woefully short of thread on the photo?

  4. You can just buy the glass.

The original is smaller diameter past the thread so you can back the nut off exposing more thread.
The copies aren't - the actual thread is long enough, but you can't back the nut off past the thread.

That's as I remember, but someone on Samba says this...

I reckon those are both after market.

  8. T25's came with a convex mirror on the passenger side as standard.

I am thinking of buying the convex/wide angle replacements mirrors and I was wondering if a LHD vehicle affects which mirrors I buy?

  10. Not at all , they're all the same...

Cheers. I was wondering due to angles and the changed relative distance to each mirror from my lefty position. They mention in the eBay shop to speak to them if it is a LHD vehicle and so, with the bank holiday, I thought I'd ask here first.

  12. Oh ... hang on ... i`ve dismantled them to rebuild with silicone and i`m possibly wrong , the arms may be `handed` on the upper joint where the arm joins the mirror ??

    Sorry old bean

No problem. It is only the glass I'm thinking of changing so arms don't come into it. I'll check with the company as the angle of view I have to my right hand mirror from my LHD is different to a driver in a RHD looking at the same mirror. My viability is currently not good to say the least.

I’d fit the convex mirror to both sides, or not at all, having the left view different to the right might be confusing – it could confuse me anyway.

I agree, that is my plan.

  16. I have a LHD and would fit a convex mirror on the offside but no need on the nearside.

If anyone knows how to change the glass in a tidy manner, perhaps they could do a "how to" for us simpletons. :)

The reason I was thinking of doing both is as mentioned above, not having to readjust my understanding of distances but also to give better view. I'll contact them about which mirror and report back here.

I’ve fitted two but broke one using glass and seals from new chrome housings in the original stainless-steel housings. Hopefully there will be some expert that will tell us it’s easy with an ice lolly stick and he’s done dozens in five minutes – or something like that.

  20. The original mirrors without a plastic bead are easy, just need packing outwards with a bead of 1mm cable to hold the glass flush with the mirror edge otherwise it sits too deep in the housing. Everything fixed in with clear silicone...
Going to tackle a beaded one shortly - maybe next week...
