  7. I spent 6 months travelling around Greece in mi van in the early `90s , met some lovely people who were far outnumbered by the wannabe millionaires . Although not in the country a massive amount of time , i gained a basic insight into how it all worked and was stunned when a few years later the EU welcomed them with open arms . Greek pride seemed to dependant on how well you could screw the system . One common dodge was anyone could have as many jobs as they wanted but no matter what you earned , overall tax was only paid on the lowest wage .
An `entrepreneur` could have a few successful businesses each with a multi million Drachma turnover and also take a basic wage as a cleaner . He would only have to pay tax on the cleaning wage - and this was perfectly legal !!
That is only one example of many - they make our benefit cheats look like amateurs ......

Until this corrupt country sees the big picture they`re stuffed i`m afraid .

  8. I'm afraid there's only one answer to this big mess.
Anytime, anywhere that somebody has anal sex, they have to pay a bum tax to Greece. Everybody's bottom will have to be monitored by GPS of course to avoid any cheating.
Should be back on their feet in no time.

  9. This. Nobody doubts the Greeks are great folks, but the whole system seems to revolve around how much you can get away with. Until that's fixed, they're not going anywhere.

That is a great idea . Hopefully, they remembered to patent bumming.

    <edit> Sorry, I meant Bumming®

I've never been to Greece but I've been on a North Sea Ferry so I've probably seen some of their olive groves that we as net contributers to the EU are subsidising.

  14. Yep - it seemed to when it was `in house` with the Drachma .
Shame everyone else in the EU has to subsidise the Greek inability to change for long term
    gain .
I like how the new prez got in saying he was going to renegotiate the Greek contribution to the union - they`re broke , it`ll never get paid back as the country has no industry to speak
    of . Olives , history and tourism won`t pay diddly-squat .
Go over the water to Turkey and you`ll see a totally different outlook .
Oh - and the whole country does`nt close up and go for a kip all afternoon ....

Leave `em to it , they had a great opportunity and were stupid enough to miss out .

  15. Its not going to well for the Greeks is it. They are skint, one of their fighters crashed today killing 10 people and poor old Demis Roussos has died. They say they come in 3's

Surely mentioning that you would never employ a Greek dishwasher is more racist?

Was there really a problem in Greece that could have solved by joining the EU? Or has an entire country been shafted so a few could become very rich? A bit like irresponsible bank lending on a huge scale. I'm not surprised the population voted for the two fingers to EU approach.

  19. This is closer to the truth, in reality its no different to what's gone on in every other country that's had a financial crisis in the past few years, ie been shafted by the people and institutions that are supposed to look after the people. Only difference is that country's like UK, USA etc have the means to get themselves out of the Marmite.

And a dim/dumb enough population to put up with it?
