Can I suggest you go and have a great time, then ***** off and not pay your bill.

We are encouraged to blend in with the locals after all.

:) - signifies some truth mixed in with humour, whilst recognising not everyone is like that.

  2. I was considering it. If the weather was bad, I was going to blame a passing immigrant for it, or possibly beat them up.

Greece truly is a basket case.

They should not have joined the EU, it was a fine rural sleepy place with high import taxes to keep the Drachma from wandering and all was well. Or better than it is now at any rate.

I have a lot of sympathy for anyone *****ed over by the banks - but from what I've read, the level of tax evasion and corruption is endemic.....

Basicly no one paid any tax well apart from the poor working man.

I agree - the 'everyone join Europe as we can sell things to them' model utterly failed a lot of countries.

When I went to Ireland through the 80's to visit family, there were some new cars and a lot of old beaters.

Went in 2002 and you couldn't find a car older than 3 years old.

In 2006, house prices in Dublin were as high as London - despite, as far as I could tell, there only being one major new company employing, and that was Intel.

Not a huge surprise it went pop.

I know a lot of us have been but here's my take, I first went about 25 years ago, Everybody was riding round on donkeys and it was really cheap, so we went a again a few times around the same time because we liked it, then I never went till about 4 years ago, everybody was driving round in brand new Mercs and it was expensive. It took us as country about 200 years to do the same thing, two world wars and an industrial revolution and we're still not perfect, the whole of southern Europe is in the same boat,no one pays tax but they want modern living

Similar, I spent a few weeks in Athens and a month picking Apricots in the middle of nowhere. If you bought 1/2 a chicken and chips at the cafe you sat there all night and huge salads were free as was as much wine as you could drink as much bread as you could eat and a bottle of gorgious olive oil to drown it all in. Poor but happy I'd have said.

  11. I think you'll find the "poor working man" is none too keen on paying tax, either...

Then I went to Egypt for a month which was even better. Alexandria, Cairo, Luxor all in the height of summer. We were the only tourists there I think, everyone else goes in winter/spring/autumn. We went in June. It was 104 degs in the shade, most people slept all day and stayed up most of the night. Lovely generous people. Egypt is also Fecked now unless you go and hide on the coast which seems a bit pointless.

The way this reads makes it sound like you were there 'during the war' :)

Lovely generous people - I genuinely think this is true of most people around the world - as I've said before, it's the lot that seek power that do the damage.
