I have been busy refurbing the kitchen and bought 30 m2 of laminate floor. I can fit it myself, but time is against me and decided to ask for prices from people to fit it for me. I have had quotes of £300 + which I think is excessive given they only have to cut and lay it. I will have everything ready. Level floor, skirtings off, doors off, underlay laid and will replace the skirting myself, so a pretty straightforward job for someone. Has anyone paid to have this done recently and how much did you pay. I know, I have left them the easy bit, and should do it myself ( which I can do ) but I wanted to save a bit of time!
Big kitchen! I charge £10 /m² and that's less than the going rate round here. Can depend on room shape , awkward cuts, how many doorways/thresholds. I know you say it's all prepped etc, but that can put people off. If you've missed a nail head sticking up, ultimately the fitters going to get the blame when you notice it poking through the floor after he's finished......
Fair point, but it will be prepped properly as I know how much the laminate cost. The frustrating thing is,I really can do this myself, but just wanted to save a bit of time. Your price is about what I have been quoted really. So,I guess I either cough up or get down on my knees again.
30 m2, no edging to fit, should be down in a day, day & half at most. £300 is not excessive though bearing in mind all the overheads the contractor will have, insurances, fuel etc.
Sounds about right to me too. Just ripped our laminate up after 5 years as it was starting to curl a bit on the joins. Replaced it with Karndean so expecting that to last much longer!
If all the prep is done, and you're going to refit the skirting yourself, then as @SweeneyTodd says, you should be able to lay it yourself quite quickly. I can think of a lot of things I would rather spend £300 on.
Beginning to think this myself. A lad has just offered to do it for £100,but he's not a pro and I can see myself having to supervise. Might as well do it and put a couple of days aside. It's too expensive laminate to mess up. The trouble I have isn't forking out, although having been in the building I know when I am being fleeced. It's trusting people to do a good job.
While I have been on here today. I have been and fetched underlay from B n Q. Repaired a burst pipe. Rewired and extended two sockets. Dealt with two blokes that came around to give me estimations and ripped up 5 x 3m of old Marley floor tiles. Not Marley the ghost. In about an hour I will walk the dog, come home have my tea,get changed and go drive my truck 280 miles. Tomorrow I will do similar, and the next day, and the next. It's how I roll.
Just had two more people view the job. So far the kid that has done it for his mates before and has all the tools and everything. £100 cash mate, is my favourite I liked him. I liked his innocence and upfront nerve really. Then the other two came around. A bloke that was older than me, He wanted £12 an hour and said the last one he did took him 29 hours. I asked him if he had a clue as to how long this job would take, He shrugged his shoulders and asked how long is a piece of string. I thought long enough to hang yourself mate, which you just did. Then a chap just came around. He was full of cold and very surly. He is going to give me a price later. I didn't take to him or his communication skills Guess I may be asking the kid to have a go and supervising him. He seemed a decent enough kid. It could be a laugh. Or not
yea give the young un a chance, he probably needs the £££ more than the rest, at that price you could help out unpacking ..and supervising at the same time..
Tell you what, I'll do it for £250. If you also pay my diesel from here , Travelodge for the night, and some corporate entertainment . I have 100℅ satisfaction rate.
So true really. It was only time I was thinking of Al. I have rescheduled to do it Monday/tues - myself. Just have to make sure I get the kitchen inset lights wired. Ceiling and walls painted and the hallway floor cleared between now and then. No pressure.
