  1. Thanks guys, I will do the fuel pressure check today (when it stops raining) ....it is petrol - had a full tank for a trip and that is now down to 1/4. !

As I said maybe a daft suggestion plus it was 5 in the morning and I'd had a few ;):):)

  3. No start with the AFM disconnected and neither with the Fuel pressure regulator vac hose off and blocked - no fuel leaks underneath and all pipework seems okay and have ordered a new T4 box fuel filter.

@Cov1987 - if you do find a Cali spec dual relay it would be great if I could try it.....

The wiring to the Cold Start valve looks very brittle - could a break in that wiring cause a lack of power to the whole system?

  4. Finally found a 13 pin double relay in the garage. It doesnt have a part number but it was bagged to suggest it came with the 79 cali system I had.

Will send first thing Monday 1st class as it is teeny. In the meantime if I get the chance will try to check whether it actually works or not- think it is very similar to an 11 pin with extra connections for the elec ignition.

  5. Many thanks @Cov1987, will sort out the postage and extra "thanks" when I get to meet you - hopefully at T/E !!

  6. Apparently the extra pins on the 13 pin are 88e and 88f. Looking at wiring(vintagebus) based on Vanagon looks like the former goes to the Ign control unit and latter goes to ecu at pin 29 but it is not too clear.

I will check relay later with my powerprobe to make sure it is switching. I would do all the tests as per Bentley if you havent already in case it is a voltage drop problem with the harness.

  7. Not done a comp test @pkrboo - it was running fine (and used regularly), I just parked up with no issues and it refused to start the next time I got in it!

As Rick reminded me earlier in the thread, it did this before and was traced to the live feed to the ignition module from the dual relay - have been assuming the relay was okay, it seemed to be doing what it needed to .......with the help of @Cov1987 I should be able to rule that out....!

  8. I had this on my beetle it turned out that a spade connection in the fuse box had come off. The engine turned but would not start as no spark.

  9. Unfortunately couldnt test it as unable to find my leads and ran out of time. Stuffed it in the post anyway so fingers crossed that it works and fixes your problem.

  10. No problem at all - its worth a try!!

  11. So any updates? I can't find the other thread about you getting it started but wanted to check all the wiring

he got it sorted, the wires had been mixed up and messed about - suspected hotwire or meddling by someone - no hatch lock.

  13. I knew that bit but wasn't sure if he had done the extra checks he wanted to do and make sure it was all ok
