..and....STILL......Non starting

  1. Right.................new coil and Ignition amp/module and still no go......so its on to the dizzy, as its a Cali spec 2.0Fi I've got the Hall Effect distributor so am a bit lost when it comes to sorting this out! Down the road is a guy who does Mobile Mechanics and has helped me before so its over to him I'm afraid.

Do you have a spark in any of your plugs or are they all dead.

If your coil is ok but no spark it's your distributor.

  3. ..first of all thanks to all who have had input (and provided bits!!).........................but still no go :(

New coil / Ignition module / another dizzy and Hall effect unit - there is power everywhere its supposed to be, fuel flowing and cold start thingy is working - been around the earth's and replaced a few brittle wires, checked all fuses.

So...can any one tell me how to test the dual relay (bearing in mind its a California spec with the extra pin) and/or can anyone lend me one of these so I can rule that out???
    Cheers B

  4. It's in my Bentley manual I think. Will take a look.

I have a Cali 13 pin but I'm in the southeast.

  6. Thanks for the help - I'm most grateful will do the test in the morning!!

  7. Do you have a hot start relay?

  8. ...........is that the one on the right of the firewall??

Just questioning you say fuel is flowing? Do you mean it's pumping when you crank the engine? If so the dual relay is working at least enough to start the engine!

  10. Could be fitted anywhere.

I had a problem with my fuel pump when it got wet.

  11. Cheers @Flakey - yep pumping when cranking the engine over, so I take it that the Dual relay is okay?

AndyC - looking at Ratwell on interweb, yep I do have a factory fitted hot start relay but fuel pump is okay!

So looks like Dual relay is okay - back to square one......

Where have you tested for fuel?

Have you put a timing light on whilst cranking to check spark interval is correct ?

  13. What relay are you meaning, a hot start relay wasn't fitted at the factory.

I'm talking about the dual relay that works the fuel pump on the FI.
The hot start relay is a red herring here I would say, if it's even got one it's unlikely to be the problem here!

  15. I'm in the hands of a mechanic really, so relaying what he has done (with me watching!)...

This is mostly over my head - parked it up one day and a week or so later it wouldn't run - there's no spark, as I understand it there is no pulse from the Hall unit back to the coil. There is a relay on the right of the firewall which is wired in to the main factory loom - I assumed this was a hot start relay as it matches Ratwells picture.

Not sure where fuel was tested, I was in the cab cranking the engine over ...engine bay stinks of fuel however when we have been turning it over.

  16. I am sure you have already done this but have you tried starting it with the plug to the AFM disconnected.

  17. Spark? Fuel is pumping? Are the injectors opening and spraying fuel? FI is very susceptible to fuel pressure. Is the fuel filter blocked? Is the fuel pump current draw within spec? Is pressure within spec? Pull off the vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator(and plug hose) which should raise psi if it is too low. Visual inspection of fuel lines underneath etc.

There are some notes on ratwell for the double relay.

Let me know the part number you need and I will check the shed again.

Need to methodically go through this or you will become a swap-tron and go mad.
You need to kick that FI system's @ss!!:theforce:

  18. Stupidly I hadn't thought of the filter - that's a route to check out tomorrow - thanks!

Probably a daft suggestion - maybe..

Is the fuel coming through actually petrol?
Maybe just maybe you stuck a tenners worth of diesel in by mistake that probably got diluted with the petrol so ran ok at the time..
But left a day or so would have settled to the bottom of the tank and is now being drawn through as almost neat diesel..

As I say ..probably daft to suggest it but you've tried everything else

  20. Okay sounds like a spark/ignition problem so lets put fuel/air out of consideration for now. The double relay should be fairly straightforward to test.

I'm out at kids football this morning but will see if I can find a relay this afternoon.
