Put on the drive 3 weeks ago running fine, yesterday not starting - Turns over fine There is a spark Fuel is pumping all wires appear to be connected ???? 2.0Fi with Hall effect distributor so no points - any ideas anyone - Cheers B
I had this and an earth had come off (well, I forgot to reconnect!) an earth wire to the left of the firewall.
check the connections to your twin relay, pull the plug and waggle it - mine used to do this all the time when it sat on the drive.
Thanks all - will have another dig around - your right Ricky, I forgot the issue I had with the dual relay a couple of years ago - and I'll dig the easy start out!
This is on-going now - new coil and ignition module (amplifier) and still no start - there is power to everything but no spark....any more ideas anyone???
post 1 said you had spark, now you haven't? are you running points or module? edit i see module, have you replaced the king lead from the coil to the dissy?
there is a checklist thingy for the fuel injection it may even be the air flow meter etc. message @pkrboo he was the main one who helped diagnose mine when it was playing up. I don't have the link to the troubleshooting guide on this computer.
Ignore the fuel injection system until you know that the ignition system is OK. FI on these is pretty much bullet proof, they don't just fail. Is your battery fully charged, my mates FI won't start from cold after being left unless the battery has been on the trickle charger. Put a test lamp on the +ve and -ve of the coil, could be that you're not getting 12volts there.
Cheers again all - will check the voltage this pm.... Ricky - I was sure I had a spark but it appears not (durr...) so coil was the obvious choice and ignition module/amp the next thing...
not sure if the spark signal is generated from the ecu or if that just powers the injectors, if you've no spark then and you've done the coil and module i'm as lost as you now, hopefully pkrboo might see this or @davidoft i know the ts2 won't let it start if that's failed but i "guess" there would still be a spark - check you have power to the coil as above i think you can hold the king lead close to the block (gloves/insulated) and that will tell if it's your dissy
If the engine rotates at full speed but doesn't fire, check all the modules and relays on the firewall and the like aware connected and earthed properly.
I read somewhere that something like 80-90% of auto eletrical problems are in the wiring and not the components. Doesnt take much corrosion on the wire contacts to mess things up. So check all the contacts. As stated earlier the the FI system is usually solid so check for all the usual: air, fuel , spark. It doesnt like vacuum leaks so check all your hoses are not perished and connections are sound. I would go through the L jetronic test procedure- I believe that is referenced in the Mech Tech Howto section. Also look at the Ratwell "Limping home with FI " as has some useful tips, like pulling off the vacuum hose on the pressure regulator to increase fuel pressure. Good luck.
I second checking Temp Sensor 11 on the lhs of the engine bay by No3. It's quite disconcerting to think this tiny wire & exposed connection just hanging at the back of the dizzy by plug 3 could cause so much grief! @davidoft & I had a play at the last TE with the connection on ours & it flat refused to start with the wire disconnected. It allows the engine to flood with fuel when faulty. It's a starting point coz it's very easy to accidentally disconnect it when poking around the engine bay. However, as said above check the obvious of fuel & spark then bring in the big guns @pkrboo & davidoft.
I had that on mine, it doesn't stop the spark though just fully opens the injectors and fills the cylinders with fuel.
The ignition system is really simple, Google ratwell info and read through it. I'd post a link but can't from my phone.
If there is no spark it is either the coil or the distributor, so can you try the coil on something else? You can check the distributor with a multimeter if you rotate it, you will get a pulse from the green wire
