I remember when people laughed at these
What’s more funny is that they make some of the Engine’s they put in Audi’s now :)

Yes, that’s one car company that has dragged its self out of the ‘so absolutely awful even in 40 years time no one will look back on it fondly’ class.
It’s peers at the time, Lada and Yugo, didn’t fare so well!

  3. VW buying Skoda has had a lot do with their success, I suspect; Skoda being located next door and having lower labour rates, VW must have thought they were a bargain. Mind you, they were really awful in the 70's and early 80's weren't they? I mean, even BL were better

I think I'm ill. I now have my two ultimate cars - the buggy and the bus. Do I need help?

What do you call a Skoda Rapide convertible with twin exhausts?

    What's my prize?

Why does a Skoda have a heated rear window?

My wallet does not match my taste unfortunately.
All this talk of BL stuff needs rebalancing...
Have a look at this article on the Dino on Tyrrells classic workshop channel :) :)
If you like that then you will like his video on the Miura - compare his carb tuning of that compared to a 34pict3 solex ;)

  13. Had a Red Marina for years. bought it in 1973. Drove it back and forth from Germany the old B series engine never missed a beat.
Had a peculiar lower steering pivot on the suspension strut needed loads of grease otherwise it collapsed
In 1980 sold it and bought an Audi 80.

borrowed this picture but this was the colour of mine,

  14. The poor Allegro was never meant to look as frumpy as it did. Harris Mann's original sketches were for something far sleeker.

As with all Leyland projects of the time it was hamstrung by the cost accountants. In the case of ADO67 it was being forced to use an existing heater matrix, which caused the scuttle to be raised, it then had to be able to accept the E series OHC engine, mounted centrally with the gearbox immediately below it which dramatically raised the bonnet line as well. This dragged all the other proportions along with it, a tragedy. Imagine if you will, had the finished product had looked more like the original concept, and it was fitted with the hatchback it was crying out for...
It might have been a very different story.

There are quite a few cars mentioned on here that I’ve thought about purchasing in recent years. A Skoda Estelle and amazing Allegro to name but two. Someone in Sheffield has a very nice Rapide but it’s about £10K so too expensive for me.

I pondered a Maestro van before my latest C15 and I also saw a Montego EFI that I thought could be my luxury car :)

It was mine around 11 years ago. Triumph stag alloy wheels were a perfect fit! Had some engine transplant ideas and coil over suspension mods planned but a Mk2 Golf 16v gti which belonged to an older bloke I used to work with, was offered at a good price.

  19. We used to have Montego EFi's as company cars, they were brisk.
I wasn't driving - really - but I once saw an indicated 130mph, four up on the Sheffield/Chesterfield bypass.
