  1. Replaced carbs, fired her up, she fired first time left running for 30 seconds turned her off because needed to set the carbs, come to fire back up - not having it! Have sparks from all the plugs bar one thats weak, seems to be flooding, going to get new rotor arm, dizzy cap, leads and plugs do you think this may solve the problem? My poor son will be bald after this ;)

  3. Hi Ricky we have just looked at that but its out of stock, we have however found all items separatley on JK but theres 2 types of rotor arms, both say suitable for T2 2000cc so not sure which one we need. Probably best if we go for the same one shown in the unavailable kit? just watching a video it says you can go for either, one is a rev limiter?

  4. ps looks lie the one we have on is a rev limiter

the points you need depend on the distributor fitted be it vac advance or not, you could always fit electronic ignition to do away with points altogether, there's loads on ebay.

  8. Well we have now had the van looked at by a vw expert, quite a lot of work needs doing around £2330! We are now wondering whether to go for a new engine rather than faff about changing this that and the other. Rather than a 2ltr put in a 1600 as this woulld be cheaper and also parts would be cheaper. We feel a bit cheated now, we knew the van wanted attention but didnt think this much :( The guy did say once work is done we would have a cracking van. Body work and interior is excellent but the mechanical side is a let down and more important!! TBH I feel like selling it. We paid £8k for it. :'(

  9. What does he say needs doing for it to come to £2330?

  10. Too much for me to remember.... when I get the list hopefully tomorrow I will post on here. There's a few things which don't need doing straight away, but still lots that does :(

  12. Hya, my sons at the garage now looking through the list and is ticking off what he can do. Looks like we are going to replace the 2 litre engine with a 1600 one. I will list some stuff when I no whats what.

  13. don't do it.... that'll be the worst decision ever!!

What's wrong with the 2l, and what've you been quoted to fix it?

  15. Going 1600 is the wrong decision. I was offered the same 'advice' with my 2ltr 6 months ago. Turned out he was a BS merchant.

  16. To put in a 1600 is gonna cost around £2k... by time you've bought an engine, got the correct tin and bits... exhaust... That sort of thing...

    It's not cheap...

Depending on what's wrong with your engine, I can generally rebuild them for around £1500... but as your son is a mechanic, why not get him to do it...? It's not that hard

  17. cheers everyone will get back to you when the boys are back
