1975 devon revamp - scampervan

  1. Anything you would do differently was really about the construction of the jig, which you have answered with the wobbly "A" frame :)

I did wonder how it would hold up with the weight of a 'bay on it - I have also got some heavy duty castors in the shed I might fit at some point but will get it mounted first to see how it feels.

Did you find it "balanced" nicely with adjusting the drop arms on the swivel bit as per his description, or is that a bit optimistic. The way its propped on axle stands implies the balance isn't great :)

    cheers,

    MM

  2. o right lol. yeh i think im defo goin to give it some extra support. my shell is still top end heavey as the pop top is still fitted.
i guess it wouldnt be hard to find the centre of gravity but i set it up so that i could get enough ground clearance to tilt it right over and its not hard to roll in its current position. the axle stands are there because the "locking device" on the jig is quite frankly rubbish lol, and in the position i have it in atm the bolt wont go through the "locking device" currently. when it is upright though the locking device does hold it ok, although you might want to drill out the bolt hole on the frame and fit a more heavy duty bolt as i bent the once supplied

  3. All progress is good progress mate

I would have liked a roll over jig for mine it would have made welding the underside so much easier

.......but I think in my garden, it would have sunk quicker than Lukes X wing fighter into the swamps of Dagobah

  4. cheers diddy. yeh i could see the jig sinking at yours, its abit wobbly on concrete never mind mud lol

was up the workshop again last nite and put in a few more hours. i cant wait to get all the underseal removed as im really starting to hate doing it lol

    and finally removed the pop-top

pop-top needs some work but nothing major, one of the vents is broken and there are a few cracks in the gel coat, least of my worries at the moment though

Great thread. My van is a rhd N reg Devon van conversion too.... probably converted about the same time ..

were probably at the same point in the resto to, these vans just keep throwing curve balls at you, the rust never seems to end. I stripped a the main rusty panels off at the start, then sent it to be blasted, that threw up pinhoes in the seat base floor panels.. and rear inner tubs.... your probably best to forget keeping the sills that are on the van and chop the whole lot out and do the jack points and outriggers at the same time, save messing with patching the iner sil ends and wil last years, imagine having to do them the year after the van hits the road.... you know it makes sence.... :)

    Keep up the good work.

P.S what are the points on the front of te van tat are usd for attahing the front of the rollover jig? Im just being lazy and asking rather than working it out

also whats involved in removing the pop top ... had a look ages ago then decided there was more pressing thigs to attend to, plus ive got space to store it now ....

cheers for now..keep up the good work

  6. some great work goin on there

  8. its been a while since my last update but to be honest there hasnt been any progress. ive spent a few evenings on it while a mate has been working on his caddy in the workshop and just been spending my time scrapping off the underseal.

either way here is some pics of the progress that has been happening slowly

heater tube removed and underseal removed

nearside front outrigger and jacking point removed

looks like when it was replaced it was just put ontop of the old one

the mess to the top hat section :(

then rolled over the otherway, lucky it was far enough away from the wall as i never checked when i put it on the jig

    and them more scrapping

both rear tubs look abit worse for ware, but im hoping i dont need to replace them

and a couple bits on the front chassis that needs attention
this one should be simple enough

not sure how im going to tackle this one yet though

thats it for now, although i did get a call from JK this morning to say my driver front arch was finally back in stock ;D

my problem now is that i know the main underside is ok and shouldnt need much work, but where do i start?!?!?!?!?

  9. Good thread, im enjoying reading it. How are you cleaning the underseal off? thats my job for weekend :(

  10. cheers daisy1. i wish it was coming on as well as yours though :(

not sure if mine was the standard underseal but most of it just chips off with a scrapper, otherwise ive got a knotted wheel for my grinder. it makes light work of it but gets abit dodgy when it catches the edge of the panels

  11. She doesent look too bad underneath all the underseal dude ive seen a hell of a lot worse
Good luck with the rest of the resto dude

  12. Sorry to hi jack a question, I have been stripping my underseal off with a hot gun, scraper and then spraying petrol on what is left to remove the remnants. Not quick or easy but does work. There could be and are probably better ways, but that is how I am tackling it.

    Good thread and good luck.

  13. My underseal is quick waxy in places so i think a combination of scraper and blow gun is in order :- then as Peebee said some petrol to finish her off ha ha

great work there buddy. its coming along nicely!

  15. ok i admit that ive been slacking alot lately but after a well needed holiday in south africa its time i cracked back on with the bus. im now just trying to sort out a shot blaster or atleast see if i can get enough pressure in the one i have atm. i plan to blast and etch prime the underside totally before i carry on with anymore of the repairs so that i know exactly what needs to be repaired, well thats the plan :p

  16. so it will be finished for summer then ?! ;D ;D ;D

looking forward to seeing some more progress :)

  17. far from it haha. i have ordred my new inner front valance now though. got a genuine vw brazil item so when thats on then i can get the front on finally

  18. Wow, top class work.

  19. progress at last! not alot but some is better than none.

new inner valance arrived during the week so i started putting that on today. after all the hassel of the partern part panel not fitting i was really happy that the genuine panel just fitted straight away without any problems. only problems today was that my welder decided not to playball and was having problems striking an arc :(

anyway photos to come :D :D
