Think it is mainly down to some people thinking its devaluing and devolving the ethos of classic camper ownership - I have personally had several people get rather aggressive with me when I broached the subject myself at VW shows. Apparently you should spend £8k+ on a large aircooled motor if you want to go faster, no mention of reliability, Marmitee pattern parts or ancient technology just that going watercooled is the enemy Obviously I took their objections on board and thats why im currently installing a 5 speed subaru gearbox and 2.5 ltr legacy engine. And although it will be mot'd every year it wont be getting treated as a kit car and going on a q plate
Well said . I think the argument is all down to personal interpretation of the rule book . My van has passed for years with the chassis in a very poor , nay , dangerous state but fails the MOT , according to the book , because the seats aren`t adjustable Are slightly lowered vans classed as modified ?? Do twin carbs on a 1600 fail the modification guide lines ?? Mine was originally a Dutch postal van which was brought over and converted into a camper so i suppose that`s a radical modification ?? Load of TOSH !! I , along with the majority on here really don`t care - each to their own and let `the man` try to enforce the rules
Each generation wants new symbols, new people, new names. They want to divorce themselves from their predecessors. Jim Morrison Vehicle modifications will ebb and flow like the tides and trends of a generation, like it or dislike it its a fact!
We've had hassle at a show because we got rid of the original Westy curtains (they had years of dirt and grime in them and looked well past it) but the guy giving us the grief wouldn't let go. I like the individuality of what everyone does with their buses, not many are the same. I especially enjoyed watching Matt (pkrboo) doing his own as with you and Razzy Ray, good on yers for getting stuck in, sharing what you have learned and enjoying the result. That's what its all about! Life is too short to get hung up and het up about what folk are doing, it should be challenging, fun and enjoyable
Will the availability of the rubbish pattern parts available for the ancient aircooled engines also ebb and flow? Atleast modern engines and their parts arent made of cheeze and produced in some poorly lit warehouse out of the cheapest nastiest metal available The lack of quality "new" parts was the primary reason ive gone for the conversion - if you are running an og engine without a single "new" part you will probably be fine. I replaced a valve stem with a new part and it shattered and destroyed my aircooled engine - after a full top end rebuild it was time enough to fit an alternative
I was merely pointing out that people will continue to modify their vehicles....their vehicles their choice! Trends and fashions waver some stick around some don't some for the better dome for the worse. I really could't give rats ass what people do to their vans/cars/bikes....whatever majes you happy do it lifes to short. So in answer to your question porsche engined beetles 10 years ago subaru at the moment! Who knows maybe daihatsu in another 5 do what makes you happy and screw anyone who tries to tell you different.
There is hardly anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price only are this man's lawful prey. John Ruskin
Do you think VW Brazil missed a trick when they went water cooled and fitted a VW engine not a Subaru?
The Scooby just suits it better cos it's a boxer engine, and far better than the wasserboxer in the T25
